When you think outdoor summer activities, your mind might go to beach trips and dips in the pool. But, Jacob Payne wants you to know that there are plenty of other options around Atlanta for getting outside and enjoying the summer. “I like to bike around and see new places,” said Payne, a second-year master’s student in Aerospace Engineering. “I keep finding great spots in Midtown, like the lounge on the roof of the Hotel Clermont or some of the trails off the BeltLine. It’s fun to have a variety of stuff to do off campus.”
Are you a current student with advice and thoughts you'd like to share with incoming grad students? Be sure to apply to be our speaker for this year's Graduate Student Convocation. The deadline to apply is July 8.
When it comes to health insurance requirements for grad students at Georgia Tech, you fall into one of two categories: mandatory or voluntary.
If you're in the mandatory category (click Read More below to get to an FAQ that will help you determine this), you have a few options during the enrollment period from July 16-Sept. 10. Already enrolled in a comparable policy? You can waive the Georgia Tech Mandatory Student Health Insurance Policy (SHIP).
But, if you don't have alternative coverage, you're required to enroll in SHIP, which also includes dental and vision coverage. Mandatory plan premiums for fall and spring/summer coverage are $876.36 and $1,219.40. (If you're a GRA or GTA, roughly 70% of your Mandatory plan premium will be covered by Tech, and your student account will be billed a reduced amount.)
If you're enrolled in four or more hours and aren't required to have health insurance but would like to, you can enroll in the Voluntary SHIP. Voluntary plan premiums for fall and spring/summer coverage are $1,121.36 and $1,561.40.
Premiums are paid twice annually — once in fall for fall semester coverage (Aug. 1-Dec. 31) and once in the spring for spring/summer semester coverage (Jan. 1-July 31). For more information, click on the link below.
