One of the key phrases that comes up again and again in the Christian scriptures, is the absurdly simple sounding “do not be afraid”. But anyone who has tried to do that in the face of something that seems insurmountable, knows how complicated that really is.

I once stood at the top of a simulated parachute drop, willing myself to step off the ledge. It wasn’t even the first time I’d tried, but I was still terrified. I had actually done it before - I knew I wouldn't die, I knew it was safe. Well I sort of knew - part of me did, but another part knew that there was no tension on the harness, it felt as if I would just free fall straight to the floor. I couldn’t bring myself to jump. I didn't jump.

But still the phrase ‘do not be afraid’ rings in our ears, because as long as we are held back by fear, from stepping off the ledge, from going in to the deep, then we are prevented from being all that we could be. We are prevented from becoming the best version of ourselves.
