CalFresh Healthy Living, UC in Action!
Diving into Summer School Nutrition Education, UCCE Tulare County
|
|
Tulare City School District (TCSD) and Earlimart Elementary School joined efforts with UC CalFresh Healthy Living of Tulare County to make summer school a memorable learning experience for students.
Nutrition Educators, Maria and Marina educated K-7th grades, which included English Language Learners, students from the Migrant Program, and special needs students. The students learned about MyPlate and the benefits they gain from eating from all five food groups. Grades kindergarten through third grade were given puzzles of healthy meals and were challenged to complete it in three minutes! The students were very excited to complete the puzzle and expressed, “we have to work as a team and finish this together!” The older grades competed in Nutrition Trivia, where students split into two teams and had students alternate to answer the questions. This allowed the students to be competitive, work as a team, and put their knowledge to test!
As for Earlimart Elementary Preschool, the students learned from the curriculum “Go, Glow, Grow” facilitated by Nutrition Educator, Grilda. They learned about MyPlate and had a chance to build a food person using foods from all five food groups; such as, celery, raisins, beans, crackers, and string cheese. They were so excited to eat their food person and wanted more of their five food groups. They learned how to dance the MyPlate hokie pokie and had fun dancing at different speeds! Overall, summer school allowed children to create fun memories while learning about MyPlate!
