Development of the DLR Social Prescribing Programme

Southside Partnership DLR, with support from the HSE, Healthy DLR and other key stakeholders such as the DLR Volunteer Centre, Age & Opportunity and LBS Men's Shed on the project steering committee, has started to develop a DLR Social Prescribing Pilot Programme since late 2018 which will initially focus on specific areas in the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown area (Shankill, Ballybrack, Loughlinstown and Sallynoggin).

Social Prescribing is about supporting the health and wellbeing of people by helping them to connect with a variety of local, community-based activities and supports in their community, such as physical activity classes, art, lifelong learning courses, gardening and more.

Our service is expected to start operating from the end of September 2019 together with the first participating GP in the Shankill area and will be developed further over the next few months.

If you are interested in finding out more please contact the Social Prescribing Coordinator Lisa Sieger-Jamison on 087 737 0372 or email lisa.sieger@sspship.ie.

We are also very interested in hearing from community groups and support services in the areas mentioned as we are mapping the supports and activities available.

In case you would like to find out more about social prescribing in general, The Irish Times released a very good article about existing Social Prescribing Programmes in Ireland in April 2019 (please click here).

We will update on new developments in relation to the DLR project soon.

WEMIN Art Project

The WEMIN art project started with an introduction at the June Multicultural Women’s Breakfast and the end result will be an exhibition in October 2019 to display our “perfect city”. Artists Laragh Pittman and Clare Louise Bligh have created and designed this concept. This artwork will take shape over a series of 4 weekly workshops with 4 different groups. Women of all nationalities will work together to create “A Perfect Global City” and have a great opportunity to learn more about each other’s culture. We hope to encourage the participants to think of their own traditional motifs and maybe discover shared patterns, such as the Irish Triple Pointed Celtic Knot that is also in Arabic art or the Chinese Ying and Yang symbol that also shows up in early Indian art.
