Captains' Row Watercolor Exhibit at the Harwich Cultural Center

The local supporters of the historic Captains' Row seek to maintain the aesthetic quality along Main Street, West Harwich via proper zoning and thus preserve the charm, scale, and beauty of this 19th-century sea captains' village. The group recently commissioned a well-respected preservation architect from the College of Charleston to visit and provide some visualizations of the beloved little “village-within-a-village.” After quite some time and effort, 12 stunning watercolors have been assembled and mounted for an exhibition at the Harwich Cultural Center.

The exhibit is open from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays throughout the month of August.

Bernadette Waystack Reflects on Returning to Harwich Middle School

“About five years ago, I packed up Room 212 and left the middle school building after 20 years. I was the last art teacher to teach in the building. I was ready, as usual, for the end of the school year and ready for my next adventure as a visual arts teacher at the new Monomoy Regional High School. As time passed, I watched the Harwich Cultural Center flourish. It was bittersweet, I would come back and find strangers creating art in my space. I began to long for the opportunity I’d once had in Hyannis to be part of a creative community.

This past January, I took my first steps back when I signed up for a SoulCollage workshop with Laurinda Raquel. I felt something shift and put in an application for a studio space at the center. I was tired of working in isolation in my basement studio. I craved the balance of a work space of my own and the supportive energy of fellow artists nearby to encourage, inspire, and teach each other.

In a moment of divine timing, the Creative Suite (the former administration office), began renting. In March, I became a resident artist at the center while simultaneously starting up the monthly First Thursdays Open Art Salons. Now, I am busy juggling teaching, making art, and really enjoying the productivity of a full summer in Studio A-05. I could never have imagined five years after I moved on to the high school, my former vice principal’s office would be my new art studio!”

A Seat at the Table

Harwich Cultural Center artist Sally Fine recently exhibited at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute in Boston A Seat at the Table exhibition.

"The newest phase of A Seat at the Table opened on June 12, 2019. The exhibit has evolved to include twenty artist-created chairs representing the stories of both historic and contemporary trailblazers who found their own seats at the table.

A Seat at the Table is inspired by Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm’s words and work toward creating a more inclusive democracy. The first phase of the exhibit opened in October 2018 and is made possible with the generous support of the Fund II Foundation."

Fine's piece paid tribute to Congressman Jim Langevin from Rhode Island who is the first quadriplegic to serve in Congress, co-founder of the Congressional Cybersecurity Caucus, and Co-Chair of the Bipartisan Disability Caucus.
