     School Value for Term 2
     Pono/Integrity
Dear Parents and Caregivers,

It is hard to believe that we have reached the end of the term already. It has been an unusual term especially in light of the industrial action taken by teachers and of which I am pleased to say that a well-deserved settlement has been reached. Our school continues to thrive with our roll reaching 764 as of 1 July. Our 6th new entrant class will be full by the end of July and we anticipate starting our 7th new entrant class at the end of August.

On Friday we will be saying a sad farewell to Mrs Fiona Brown who, after 14 years of dedicated service, will be leaving us. Mrs Brown's passion and care for the children in her charge will be missed by students, staff and parents alike. May I take this opportunity on behalf of the staff and students, to thank Fiona for everything she has done for our school and community over the years and wish her and her family all the very best with her move to Tauranga. We are going to miss you.

This year we have made a slight change to the mid-year reports by adding a student comment section. I have had the pleasure of reading all of the mid-year reports and I am very pleased with the addition of the student reflections. Any feedback on the change would be appreciated.

It has been a busy term for all and I would like to wish the staff, parent helpers and students a well-deserved break and we look forward to seeing you all back safely in the new term.

Kind regards,

Gary Pasfield
Principal

Ag Day
Ag Day this year is being run over two half days - Friday 18 October and Saturday 19 October.  On Friday the students will be completing their floral and nature artworks and on Saturday there will be animal judging and family entertainment.  Things to know at this point are:

  • Orders for baby chicks are now open on Kindo, the close off date is 25 July
  • Animals born on or after 1 July are eligible for entering our animal competitions.
  • Unfortunately, there will be no calves again this year.  You can find information about our animal competitions on our website.
Absences
Please, please contact the school and let us know if your child is going to be absent.  You can report absences by leaving a message on the phone, phoning and talking to a person, emailing on office@waimauku.school.nz or using the website.  This is for your child's safety.

Waimauku School Ski Team
Each year the school enters a school ski team into the North Island Primary School Ski Championship (NIPS).  This year the year 1-6 is being held 2-5 September.   The entry requirement is that each child needs to be skiing at an intermediate level, and be able to get on and off the T-Bar by themselves.   The races are held at Whakapapa.  It is a great week and a really nice atmosphere with all the children cheering each other on.  The Waimauku team is a friendly team with all parents pitching in with various duties and helping out.   If your child would like to be part of the team or if you have any questions, please contact Claire Arkell on claire@cloudcents.co.nz or 021773771.

Games & Puzzles
Our popular Wednesday Lunchtime Club is always on the lookout for new games and puzzles. If you are having a clean out over the holidays and you have any games or puzzles you would like to donate please drop them into the school office. We are particularly looking for games and puzzles that are simple and fast to play as we only have 40 minutes.  I am also on the lookout for a rebounder for one of our students if anyone has one they are looking give away.  Many thanks.
Wendy Dunn

NorthWest Rewards
Our school is taking part in NorthWest Rewards again this year.  The campaign runs until 21 July and every $1 you spend earns a point for our school.  When you shop at the NorthWest shopping centre just take your receipt to customer services and you will go in the draw for a $500 shopping spree.  The schools with the most points win CASH!  This week is groceries week so you get doublepoints at the mall Countdown, next week is double on health and beauty and the last week of the holidays is double on stationery if you want to stock up at Typo or Whitcoulls before school starts back.  We are running a close race for second at the moment with West Harbour School so please support us!

Pool Keys
Please return your pool keys to the office.

Police 105
NZ Police recently launched a new non-emergency number, 105. They've  done this to make it easier to get hold of them in the event of non-urgent situations or ‘Things which have Already Happened’, which don’t require Police assistance immediately.
You can call them on 105 for all non-emergencies, or you can go online at 105.police.govt.nz to report things like:
- Lost property
- Theft from a public place or car
- Intentional property damage
- Or to get an update or add info to a previous report
In the event of an emergency, always call 111 - Things that are Happening Now.

Emma Dangen
Emma Dangen, a past student of Waimauku School, is competing in Young Farmer of the Year and needs votes - if you would like to support Emma please follow this Facebook link

The Ruapehu Team have been studying what life was like 100 years ago and had a full old times day where they experienced what school used to be like.
Sit up straight everyone!
NW Soccer
We have a lot of keen footballers in Year 5/6 and we were able to take two teams to the NW Competition.  Both teams competed well with Team 2 (pictured) finishing 5th and Team 1 placing 3rd.  Many thanks to Dave Stenning and our parent helpers.
Book Battle
Our Book Battlers fought the good fight last week, achieving well and having lots of fun.  For all who aren't familiar with this competition, it involves teams from around the region who train for weeks beforehand and then compete to answer literary questions.  Here are our school results:

Y5/6 Waimauku A   5th
Y5/6 Waimauku B  13th
Y7/8 Waimauku A   7th
Y7/8 Waimauku B   4th
Y7/8 Waimauku C   9th
Netball
The Waimauku Year 8 A Team competed in a netball tournament last Sunday and did really well.  The conditions were challenging with slippery courts and there were several crashes to the ground but they all got right back up!
Chess Power
Our intermediate chess team competed at the Chess Power Regional Tournament last week, achieving a 9th place for the school with Ethan Hoy achieving the highest ranking for our school at 31st.  Well done everyone and thank you to our parent helpers and Mr Robert James.
NW Basketball
Our basketball team competed at the NW  Basketball Champs last week, achieving a fabulous fourth place!  Well done everyone and thanks to Oliver Scott and Christine Lovell for your help.
Flippaball
What an exciting end to Term Two flippa ball! The Year 3/4 team had a super close game shooting ball after ball at the goal. Our defence held up really strongly with the opposition team only able to get one goal in the net. Well done Waimauku Wahoos!
The Year 5/6 team had a double header as they won their first game - triumphing again in the second match. An outstanding result considering it was two back to back games and the other teams had beaten us in the past. Well done Waimauku Whiplash!
Great to see such improvement from all the players and most importantly to see how much the kids enjoyed the games.  Looking forward to more pool fun in Term Three.
