BAJC “Board Briefs”

June 6, 2019

The BAJC Board met on June 6, 2019 to discuss the following items:

·       The 2019-2020 budget that will be introduced to the membership at the annual meeting

·       The final work of the Interim Spiritual Leader Search Committee, hopefully

·       Fundraising for the porch, ramp and accessibility project

·       The status of the “Weekly Message”

·       A Preservation Trust of VT grant to assess the structural needs of the office building on the shul grounds

·       The re-introduction of “Board Briefs”

A copy of the Board meeting minutes will be posted on the bulletin board at the shul, and if any member has any questions, please feel free to contact any Board member for additional information.

Seeking Bookkeeper

An unforeseen and untimely circumstance has recently developed with our bookkeeping department. The bookkeeper we have had for a short time and who was learning advanced techniques from Allen Cohen recently gave her notice, which focused on her personal situation. Therefore, we are once again seeking a bookkeeper, preferably from within our ranks who might have a few hours a month to volunteer or trade for their services. We are already prospecting and an alternative would be a referral to someone outside of BAJC who a member might know of. That most likely would be a modest paid position. Please contact either Stephan Brandstatter- getmusic@sover.net, Laura Berkowitz-options@myfairpoint.net or Rick Gordon-rickgordon12@gmail.com. Thanks for your help.

Social Justice At BAJC

by Jim Levinson & Laura Berkowitz

Some years back our Brattleboro Interfaith Initiative developed the idea of a "carbon fast" which church members could do during Lent - one eco-friendly action a day. The idea has gone viral. Just Google on Carbon Fast to check it out.

But why should this idea be limited to the church goers?!? Why not commemorate the month of Elul - before the High Holidays (a time of reflection and preparation) with a BAJC Save-The-Planet-for-our-Kids action program. This means that every morning during Elul, BAJC members and others who sign up would receive an "action" to carry out during the day.

 Here are some examples:

 ·        Remove one light bulb from a light in your home (without creating an unsafe situation).

·        Ensure that your cell phone charger is unplugged when not in use. Many electronics and appliances

continue to draw power even when they are off.

·        Set a timer for 5 minutes before your shower, and see how your normal shower length compares.

·        Only run your washing machine when you have a full load. Using the cold water setting saves energy.

·        Take a walk in your community. Greet your neighbors with a smile. Listen to the birds, look at the

trees, and feel the rain, snow, or sun on your face. Rejoice in all creation!

As we did when we brought the speaker on Human Trafficking, we would publicize our project and seek co-sponsorship with our Compassionate Brattleboro committee, and the Brattleboro Interfaith Leadership Alliance so that all of its churches might do the same during Lent.

Let’s put BAJC on the Social Action map!

Jewish Friends working
with Carmelite Monastics in India

BAJC’s Teresa Savel and Elia Gilbert spent over one month with the Carmelite Monastics in the South India states of Andhra-Pradesh and Telangana. Teresa has worked and maintained a friendship with these Monastics since 1995, when she turned 27 and lived in India for a year teaching and training teachers in a small village there.

Together they have formed Marygold Village (MGV), an inclusive non-profit initiative in southern India, acting in partnership with the local Carmelite Monastics, and embedded in the rich and diverse cultures of this region. Marygold Village is focused on the needs of the local families
providing physical health and well-being through organic and biodynamic food production, clean water, play-based education for the very young child, sponsorship of school-aged children's education, family support services,  vocational training, and care of the elderly through multi-
generational community life. This work has a long term goal of sustainability and aims for self-sufficiency, meaning the work would require their on-the-ground presence less and less, and in time be able to operate fully under the direction and leadership of the South Indian communities. Teresa and Elia will return to India in October.

BAJC and friends are invited to enjoy an Indian cultural feast for the senses on Saturday, July 27th at the Putney community Center, 2-4: 30 pm. This will be a fundraiser for the Marygold Village work.

The event will host the Triveni Classical Indian Dancers from Boston and there will be traditional Indian refreshments. Many donation based gifts will be available. All donations are tax deductible. The Provincial Monastic from India who Teresa and Elia are working with will be at the event.

Suggested donation of $5 for Seniors and students, $10 for individuals, $25 for families and children under 5 are free.
