Governor JB Pritzker Signs

Welcoming IL Laws!

On Friday June 21st, IL Governor Pritzker signed three powerful bills that make IL a more welcoming state. Amidst, all the nonsense we see at the national level, the White House capitalizing on fear for political gain, all the racist, anti-immigrant policies-- IL is showing a different way forward. This victory belongs to our resilient community!

1) The IL RISE Act (HB 2691) will open access to financial aid for undocumented students, trans students, African American students, and other students who previously had no access to aid. This law will be effective on January 1st, 2020.

2) The Private Detention Facility Moratorium Act (HB 2040), bars state & local communities from entering into contracts for private immigration detention centers. Making IL the first state in the nation to ban private detention centers. This law will be effective immediately, and prevent the Dwight Detention Center from being built.

3) Keep Illinois Families Together Act (HB 1637), bars 287g agreements that deputize police to act as ICE agents! This law will be effective immediately.

2020 CENSUS

2020 Census Won't Have Citizenship Question:

The Trump administration, abandoned its quest on Tuesday to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census, a week after being blocked by the Supreme Court. SSIP will continue to build strong and robust census outreach efforts at the state, county, and local levels to ensure all our communities are counted in 2020.
