CTANW FEATURED

Holiday Message from the ED

Happy Independence Day, CTANW members!

I wanted to thank all of you for the work that you do to promote independence across our region.  People live active lives and participate in our communities in real, concrete ways thanks to the tools and services that you provide.  You make the world a better place.

When I think about independence and what it means to our organization, unfortunately, I think of Initiative 976. If passed, that proposal will drastically limit our ability to promote independence for our most vulnerable citizens. Following is an excerpt of the letter that we sent to legislators last Spring:

"The proposed $30 car tabs in this short-sighted initiative would eliminate hundreds of millions of dollars – impacting funding for transit organizations and non-and for-profit transportation providers that help ensure accessibility for elders/seniors, youth, people with disabilities, and people with limited incomes in all corners of our state.
Over 55 municipal governments rely on car tab revenues to fund local transportation projects – especially in rural communities. For example, passage of I-976 would reduce Elmer City’s limited transportation budget. Certainly, we can agree that the seniors in Elmer City deserve the same level of accessibility as seniors in Seattle or Spokane – cities with more transportation funding options.
We believe that every person in Washington State has the right to access public transportation for daily activities. Returning to the days of $30.00 car tabs would devastate services for our most vulnerable residents"

Please join with me in not only voting against this dangerous initiative, but in educating your friends and neighbors about it. Anticipate more information in the coming weeks from CTANW about this initiative and how it would negatively affect our lives if it were to pass.

Once again, thank you for all that you do to ensure that everyone, everywhere can get anywhere they want to go.

Angie Coulter
Executive Director

August 8, 2019 , 9a.m. – 4 p.m., ADA Fundamentals& Public Transit; Pybus Market Board Room, Wenatchee, WA

The ADA Fundamentals is an overarching review of the transportation regulations relating to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  The course is a full day, six-hour session that will cover the origin and history of the ADA as well as the applicability of regulations to transit systems and other businesses in the transportation field.  The course will address accessible vehicle requirements, paratransit, paratransit eligibility, fixed route operations, training and maintenance requirements.  Though the emphasis will be on bus and paratransit operations, the course will also skim over the requirements for transit facilities for both bus and rail.  When students finish this course, they will leave with a solid, broad understanding of the ADA as well as reference materials to share with colleagues back at their home systems.  This course requires no foreknowledge of ADA or accessibility and is intended as a basic course.

August 9, 2019, 9a.m. – 2 p.m. , Enhanced ADA Eligibility Best Practices; Pybus Market Board Room, Wenatchee, WA

The Enhanced ADA Eligibility Best Practices Course is a second tier course for students who already have a basic understanding of ADA paratransit eligibility requirements.  This course will build on an assumed basic level of knowledge and will concentrate on trip by trip and conditional eligibility, eligibility determination models and ways to enhance existing eligibility processes.  The course will use a combination of lecture and group exercises to work through this material.  At the end of this 4-hour course, participants will be ready to conduct a review of their exiting eligibility processes and implement enhancements. This course is suggested for transit professionals already familiar with ADA paratransit eligibility and people who have just completed the ADA Fundamentals course.
