VOLUME 12, ISSUE 7 | JULY 2019

July 27th the Library is branching out to the Flatwoods City Park for one of our biggest events of the year! Free food will be provided. In addition, we will have prizes and drawings at the end of the day. Come dressed as your favorite caped crusader, anime character, or fandom character. Cosplay is a great way to get into the spirit of going to a Con. The best part about cosplay is that you can do it however you want! We will have a Cosplay Contest that evening where you can strut your stuff. Check out our various crafts and other activities that will be entertaining also!

Did you know...

In the true spirit of public libraries being open and welcoming to the public, ten years ago on July 1, 2009, a reciprocal agreement was formalized between thirteen Eastern Kentucky county libraries to allow borrowing privileges among their patrons.

Most of these libraries also offer open wifi. Prior to that, Greenup, Boyd and Lawrence counties forged a similar document with Scioto and Lawrence counties in Ohio, and Wayne and Cabell counties in West Virginia. Presenting a library card from your home library and agreeing to their rules and application process will open even more library doors.

New Pop-Up Book Collection

The Greenup Branch has started a new pop-up book collection by Matthew Reinhart, that are for “in-house” use only. You must use your card to check them out, but they can only be used in the library. Miss Vicki had the pleasure of attending a children’s conference where Matthew was one of the speakers. He showed how he creates these very intricate pop-up books. A few of his best-sellers are STAR WARS: A Galactic Pop-Up Adventure, Game Of Thrones: A Pop-Up Guide to Westeros, Encyclopedia Mythologica God’s and Heroes, Encyclopedia Prehistoria Dinosaurs, and Harry Potter A Pop-up Guide to Hogwarts, are all available at the Greenup Branch. Pick one out and have a seat at a table (because these books are too awesome for your lap!) and enjoy these amazing pop-up books. We will also have other pop-up books on display at the Flatwoods and McKell branches.

Back to School Family Nights

Join us as we read a book, watch a short movie, have a demo of electronic resources and a snack. Sign-up is required as we will once again be giving out school supplies at each branch, and registration ensures we have enough supplies for grade level from preschool to college. School supplies will be given out at the end of the program. Our “Family Nights” programs have stated goals of a family experience at the library. We must insist that children are part of that experience.

Registration begins July 22-August 6. Sign-up by calling or stopping in your local GCPL branch, or on the bookmobile, and include names, grades and branch. If you have a conflict in your schedule for event dates listed below, arrangements can be made with another branch.

Event dates are below for each branch:
McKell Branch: August 8 @ 6:00 pm (Call 932-4478 to register)
Greenup Branch: August 12 @ 6:00 pm (Call 473-6514 to register)
Flatwoods Branch: August 13 @ 6:00 pm (Call 836-3771 to register)

Summer Reading Kick-Off: A Universe of Stories

The 15th Annual Summer Reading Kick-off was held on May 16th at the Greenup Branch. The weather was perfect and a fun time was had by all. Between the fast pass and those registering at the kick-off we now have 516 children and adults signed up for “A Universe of Stories.”
