Trail Flooding Continues

With the continuing record high water levels in Lake Michigan and Betsie Bay (especially after this weekend’s monsoon!), the Betsie Valley Trail remains flooded on both sides of the causeway where M22 crosses the Betsie River. Out of concern for cyclist safety, the DNR has closed the Trail in this area until the water recedes. There is a detour map posted at each end of the flooding. It is NOT RECOMMENDED to ride through the flooded area – water depth varies, the boardwalk is slick, there can be a current, and visibility under the water is limited.

The detour:
From Frankfort to Beulah (or vice versa) cross M22 to River Road and go east ~100 yards to a paved access to the Trail on the south side of River Road.

From Frankfort to Elberta (or vice versa) proceed with caution on M22 across the causeway. High water has been encroaching across the bike lane into the roadway. It’s best to wear bright clothing and have a rear flasher on your bike as you’ll be sharing the road with cars, and not all drivers know that it’s Michigan law to allow 3’ minimum distance when passing a bicycle.

Hopefully the water starts receding soon!
