Wednesday 24th July 2019

Kia ora team,

It is an honour to be sitting at the Waitaki Valley School Principal's desk penning my first message to the students, parents and community.

I have loved my first few days at Waitaki Valley School.  We boast the G.R.E.A.Test students, support staff, teachers, parents, BoT members and community in all of the Waitaki region.   I have really appreciated the warm welcome I have received, and I look forward to meeting more of the parents and community over the coming weeks.  Please bear with me as I try my best to remember all the names and faces - I promise you I will get there eventually!

I need to make the point of mentioning that the awesome Mrs Jepson was absolutely fantastic in her Acting Principal role, keeping a steady hand on the tiller last term.  Pip, you have been extremely helpful during the handover, thanks so much for your patience and support.

This term we have a lot happening for all our tamariki.  It will be exciting, interesting and educational for all our children.   Our big Inquiry topic is, 'It's Time!'  Our goal is to have a community event at the end of the term where we will bury a time capsule full of information about us, our school, our families, and our community.  We welcome local families, businesses and community members to drop in small items to put in our Community Capsule, and of course join us for the burial later in the term.

Starting this Friday, and continuing throughout the term, all our Year 7/8 students will be heading up to Ohau to hone their skiing skills.  Thank you to Mrs Sime who will be leading these educational experiences, and also to our parental transporters - we could not make this happen without you. What an exciting opportunity for all our senior students!

Please note we also have our Cross Country coming up in Week 4.  Please make sure your children have adequate footwear as we are practising every day.

Earlier this week we were lucky to have the Ranfurly Shield on display at Waitaki Valley School.  Jason Forrest, North Otago's rugby coach, took time out of his day to bring it up and share it with our kids and staff.  It was a wonderful experience for us all.

Thanks once again for your warm welcome, it is a privilege to be part of Waitaki Valley School and I have loved meeting your amazing kids.

I hope you all have a lovely week,

Matt Bokser
