Photo of the week: Option during Butcheca's Mural Workshop
 by Martin Shayo
Hello, art lovers!

July has been a very busy month at Nafasi. For two weeks, the space was busy with traditional and contemporary dance workshops organized by Nafasi members Asedeva, leading up to the 3rd edition of Haba na Haba dance festival. Performers from South Africa, Cuba/Germany and around Tanzania presented engaging and compelling pieces on black masculinity, thoughts of home from self-imposed exile, and more.

Last week we held Dar Art Club, screening and idea exchange, this time on the topic of art aesthetics. We asked the question, must art be beautiful? What do you think?

We've also recently hosted a workshop on The Philosophy of Printmaking facilitated by Tanzanian artist and curator Gadi Ramadhani. The workshop was followed by a Printmaking Chap Chap for public audiences last Saturday. The work from the workshop is still on display in Nafasi's hall -- come by this week to see the finished works as well as the process and research drafts to get a peek into the creative journey!

We are looking forward to Encounter, an exhibition of two artists operating at their peak. Option Nyahunzvi from Zimbabwe and Butcheca have been in residence with us for six weeks.  Across several works of incredible of surrealist precision they will reflect on the links between identity and space.  Encounter opens on the 6th of August. Hope to see many of you there!

This week, Option's Workshop, The Art of The Spirit, is introducing upcoming Tanzanian artists to developing conceptual artwork, rooted in Tanzanian tradition, spirituality, and consciousness.

This is also the last week to see MORONS VS. MORALS, the exhibiton by LocalFanatics that draws inspiration from Swahili street graffiti and popular wisdom. It's in our gallery, stop by any time, and please remember that buying art from Nafasi is a great way to support artists and Nafasi itself!

We hope to see you all soon! Karibuni wote.

Chap Chap Printmaking
Nafasi closed out July in the usual style.  Along with Gadi Ramadhani, and students from his printmaking workshop, this Chap Chap offered a quick course on one the most challenging and rewarding forms of visual art.  Thanks to Gadi and all participants for a great session.  See you all at the next Chap Chap on August 31.
Mural Painting  Workshop with Butcheca
For five days artists and art students were given a chance to learn from the fine details of mural painting from one of Mozambiques finest artist.  As part of his residency with us, Butcheca offered his insights on   scaling, sketching and coloring large outdoor pieces, resulting in beautiful pieces spread all our walls.  A big thanks to Butcheca and all his students for these beautiful gifts.
Philosophy of Printmaking
From 23 to the 26 of July artist Gadi Ramadhani offered his annual printmaking workshop. Over four intensive sessions students were given a strong foundation of the history and theory of art before beginning a step by step creation of their own unique printmaking piece. They were also asked to speak on themes within their work and critique each others process. All work, and drafts from the session was then displayed in the hall for a fascinating insight into the creative process.
