1.  4 Reasons Theme Parks Are Struggling This Summer

We're waist deep into the telltale summer travel season, and Central Florida's theme parks aren't faring as well as you probably think. Disney (NYSE:DIS) has been drumming up headlines over the sluggish attendance at Disneyland in California, but things aren't going much better on the East Coast. Social media is blowing up this week with shots of near-empty pathways at Disney World's Epcot, the fourth busiest theme park in the country last year. 

2.  Hunger Games Ride Anchors Edgy, New Adult Theme Park in China

The Hunger Games has sold over 100 million books and nearly $3 billion in movie tickets, but the tale of children fighting to the death in a dystopian world doesn’t immediately lend itself to kid-friendly theme-park attractions.  Dennis Speigel, a consultant with International Theme Park Services Inc. in Cincinnati, says one of his colleagues toured the Chinese project recently and came away impressed.  “It’s not a huge park, but it looks to be done very well,” he says.

3.  SeaWorld Shakes Up Board And Adds New Director

When Zhonghong Holdings defaulted on its shares earlier this year, the Zhonghong board appointees resigned from their posts. However, Yoshikazu Maruyama, a Zhonghong appointee, was asked to stay on due to his extensive experience in the theme park industry. When Zhonghong owned a large percentage of SeaWorld shares, Maruyama was the Chairman of the Board. Now that Hill Path Capital owns roughly 35% of SeaWorld Entertainment’s shares, its founder, Scott Ross, will now be the new Chairman.

4.  Universal Orlando’s parking garages reopen after no sign of reported gunman

ORLANDO, FLA. (WSVN) - Reports of a person with a rifle at a parking garage at Universal Studios Orlando led police to shut down the theme park’s parking structures, triggering a flurry of social media posts. Orlando Police units responded to a suspicious incident at the park, just before 8:40 p.m., Saturday.

5.  NLGA passes resolution recognizing amusement ride safety in the U.S.

The National Lieutenant Governors Association (NLGA) passed a policy resolution titled, Resolution in Support of Amusement Ride Safety, carried by Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser, recognizing amusement ride safety within the United States. The resolution passed unanimously at the NLGA’s annual meeting on July 17 held in Wilmington, Delaware. IAAPA drafted the policy resolution using IAAPA’s Guideline for Effective Amusement Ride Safety Regulation in the U.S.

Controversial theme park, SeaWorld, has come under fire as two ex-trainers have claimed whales were drugged and starved - resulting in stomach ulcers and signs of self-harming.

11.  Busch Gardens offering discounted Howl-O-Scream tickets

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Busch Gardens is going on 20 years of fear. Howl-O-Scream is back again to bring more terrifying houses and bring fear to another level in Tampa Bay.

12.  Conneaut Lake Park receives offer for Hotel Conneaut

Is Conneaut Lake Park's Hotel Conneaut for sale?  The actual answer might be a little bit yes and a little bit no.  In its most recent filing with U.S. Bankruptcy Court for Western Pennsylvania on Monday, Trustees of Conneaut Lake Park has received a contingent offer to sell the hotel and is in negotiations with its creditors' representative.

13.  The rise of N. Korea’s amusement parks and entertainment facilities

A resident of Pyongyang’s Potonggang district said this in an interview with the Choson Sinbo, the newspaper of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon). The water park in question was built on a large site measuring 109,000m². Children enjoy riding on the colorful slides, while adults enjoy letting the rolling artificial waves wash over them. The scene was from a report last September on Munsu Water Park during the dog days of summer by the Choson Sinbo.

14.  Flamingo Land's huge new seafront theme park could be delayed as council looks again at plans

Labour's Cllr Steve Siddons told a cabinet meeting a timetable to sign off Scarborough Council's deal in the coming months was likely to be pushed back to allow for further scrutiny.

15.  2020 Coaster Construction Begins At SeaWorld San Diego

Following last week’s Coastal Commission approval, SeaWorld San Diego is in the process of readying the project site for construction of its 2020 Dive Coaster. As the park waits for all permits to be issued, the area has been fenced off, trees have been marked for removal, and construction equipment has begun showing up at the site.

18.  PLAYMOBIL FunPark 2020 new with "Kingdom of the Mermaids": theme world presented in detail

The PLAYMOBIL FunPark has been planning a new theme world around the world for quite some time under the name of "Mermaid's Kingdom" next year. Now, the amusement park in Zirndorf has presented the planned area in detail and revealed what visitors should expect from 2020 onwards.
 

19.  16-year-old boy removed after a coma ride in the Efteling

For a 16-year-old boy from Spijkenisse, a visit to the Efteling ended Saturday night in the hospital. The kid had drunk so much that he lost consciousness. Then he had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance, eyewitnesses report to Looopings. 

20.  Carousel Accident in Tangier Injures 20

Rabat – 20 people, between the ages of 13 and 26, were injured, on July 21, in an amusement park in the Mghogha district near Tangier railway station.

1.  Man who pulled out gun at Dave & Busters in Dolphin Mall is arrested, cops say

A man pulled out a gun inside a Dave & Busters arcade at Dolphin Mall on Sunday evening, according to Sweetwater officials.  Sweetwater Mayor Orlando Lopez told the Miami Herald that police told him the man was ”defending his girlfriend after a squabble ensued.”

2.  Museums mark 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing with events and technology

Museums and attractions held a series of programmes and events to mark the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20.
These include a giant moon (and yoga classes) at the National History Museum, Space Center Houston’s ‘Apollo 11 50th Live’, various NASA-led events, and an augmented reality (AR) app from the Smithsonian Channel.

3.  Zip World speeding towards record sales as adventure sector booms

Zip World has seen turnover and profits soar as it heads for its most successful ever year.  The North Wales-based adventure company behind the fastest zip line in the world is on track to deliver revenues of £17m over the year - up from just under £11.5m in 2018.

4.  Newport SkyWheel gets approval to start construction on riverfront

The Newport SkyWheel is one step closer to making its debut on the riverfront.  The U.S. Army of Engineers approved Newport's permit for construction of SkyWheel.  The 230-foot tall SkyWheel featuring 30 climate controlled gondolas will be built at Newport on the Levee. The wheel, constructed by Koch Development, will stand adjacent to the Newport Aquarium.

5.  Seaport San Diego tower is like nothing else on California’s coast. That’s the problem

A proposed observation tower at the edge of Pacific Highway is a polarizing symbol of change that could make or break the larger, $2.4 billion redevelopment effort planned for downtown’s Central Embarcadero.

6.  Trampoline park denies wrongdoing in man's death as calls for regulation grow

A trampoline park has denied wrongdoing in a British Columbia man’s death, saying he failed to follow warning signs and instructions and may have been impaired by alcohol or drugs.  It comes as Technical Safety BC, the provincial regulator of amusement devices, calls on the provincial government to ensure oversight of such parks due to the potential public safety risk.

7.  KENTUCKY’S HOME TO WORLD’S LARGEST GO-KART TRACK (VIDEO)

Kentucky is home to the world's largest outdoor go-kart track in the world and it is in driving distance from the Tri-State.  Kart Kountry in Shepherdsville, Kentucky, has been in business for 39 years this month.  They have several attractions but their most notable is the 1.5 mile long go-kart track. 

8.  Salina Family Fun Center Closing

A Salina entertainment venue which offers mini-golf, go carts, video games, laser tag, and a kids climbing area is closing. Via social media Jumpin’ Joe’s Family Fun Center on Sunday announced it is closing in a couple of weeks.

9.  Hackers Saw the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco as Ripe for a Ransom Attack. Are Other Cultural Institutions Next?

In recent months, ransomware attacks have debilitated local governments in Baltimore and Atlanta and sought to extort millions of dollars from small school districts and colleges. Now, museums appear to be under threat as well. And their ties to wealthy donors make them a particularly appealing mark, experts say.

10.  Kidzeum celebrates one year in downtown Springfield

After first hearing about the Kidzeum of Health and Science through Facebook, Virden resident Renee Schowalter said it was only a matter of time before she and her husband took their two children to check out the downtown Springfield children’s museum. And Saturday presented the perfect opportunity.

2.  Duinrell expands Tiki Pool with a new type of water slide

The Tiki pool will soon be expanded with a new type of water slide. That is what Duinrell director Philip van Zuylen van Nijevelt tells Looopings. A large oval slide is added to the water paradise: an oval-shaped, closed slide that allows several people to slide off at the same time. 

3.  Cloward H2O announces opening of Sopris Splash Zone at Glenwood Hot Springs

Cloward H2O, an expert in aquatic design, has announced the opening of the Sopris Splash Zone at Glenwood Hot Springs Resort in Colorado.  Cloward H2O is proud to announce that Sopris Splash Zone at Glenwood Hot Springs Resort is now open to the public. The family-friendly attraction includes 3 new zones. There is a fast-moving adventure river for older children and adults, as well as a wade-in pool with waterfalls for younger members of the family to enjoy. 

4.  Family want answers over Benidorm water park accident

The mother of a man who broke his neck in an accident at a Spanish water park says the family "want to know why and how it happened".  David Briffaut, 23, was left seriously injured after going on the Splash ride at Aqualandia in Benidorm on 8 July.

5.  A popular floating water park is back on Grapevine Lake

A floating water park with trampolines, monkey bars and balance beams is returning to Grapevine Lake Saturday for its second year of fun.  The summer party kicks off Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Meadowmere Park (3000 Meadowmere Lane), and there are different specials during the week leading up to the park’s grand opening on July 27.
Aquarium / Zoo News

1.  Nemacolin Employee Injured In Bear Attack ‘Stable And Alert’

An employee of Nemacolin Woodlands Resort was injured by a Himalayan Bear while conducting a “Safari Tour.”  According to Nemacolin, the bear reached through a wire fence, pulled the employee in and then bit the employee’s arm.

2.  Zoo Atlanta’s African Savanna habitat nears completion

Zoo Atlanta is on the verge of a transformation unmatched since the 1980s.  In that decade, with the help of a $25 million renovation, the attraction went from a city’s embarrassment to a much-lauded exemplar of intelligent and humane design.

3.  Lion exhibit coming to Brevard Zoo's Expedition Africa loop in 2021

Brevard Zoo officials plan to open a lion exhibit in 2021, featuring the popular predators as a high-profile showpiece of the Expedition Africa loop.  "One of the real tragedies in Africa the last few years is, we've realized we've lost 50% of our lion population. That is a major issue," said Keith Winsten, executive director.

4.  Henry Doorly Zoo begins work on new sea lion exhibit

Construction is underway on a $27.5 million upgrade at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha.  The project will renovate the former bear area into a state-of-the-art exhibit for sea lions. The expansion is expected to be open by Labor Day of 2020. Zoo Director Dennis Pate says the zoo is repurposing the former retaining wall to create a 275,000 gallon pool for the sea lions.

5.  Grand Rapids zoo plans more exhibits, redesign

A western Michigan zoo is proposing a makeover that would feature new animals, exhibits and experience for visitors.  The John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids is closing a month early to work on improvements. Zoo officials are hoping to widen the entryway to enhance accessibility.

6.  Fiona celebrates her second Christmas with a storybook

The Cincinnati Zoo's beloved little hippo, Fiona, will be celebrating her second Christmas this year and in honor of the holiday, she will be featured in her very own storybook, the Cincinnati Zoo announced Monday.  The book is called "A Very Fiona Christmas." In it, Fiona will be asking her zoo friends, "What's Christmas?" and they will show her the true meaning of the holiday, namely: love.

7.  Chester Zoo visitors witness 'epic' birth of rare baby chimpanzee

Visitors to Chester Zoo got more than they bargained for earlier this month when they witnessed the birth of a rare baby chimpanzee.  The critically endangered West African chimpanzee was safely delivered at the zoo at around 5pm on Saturday, July 13, giving onlookers quite the suprise.

8.  'Hero Rats' Arrive At Tacoma Zoo. Their Relatives Are Still Saving Lives.

Giant rats sound like something to be scared of, perhaps. But the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in Tacoma, Washington, thinks quite the opposite about the African giant pouched rats it just put on display. The rodents are billed as “hero rats.”

9.  Cleveland Metroparks Zoo extends Asian Lantern Festival

Due to popular demand, the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is extending the Asian Lantern Festival for an additional two weeks.  Initially, the festival was scheduled to end Sunday, July 28.  However, it will now continue Thursday through Sunday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., until Sunday, August 11.

10.  RIP Alabaster: Rare albino alligator dies at South Carolina Aquarium

An extremely rare albino alligator that lived at the South Carolina Aquarium has died.  The aquarium posted on its Facebook page that the 22-year-old alligator named Alabaster had passed away Friday morning. He had lived at the aquarium in Charleston since 2009.
Tourism / Other News

1.  Costa Rica Issues National Health Alert After Deaths Caused by Tainted Alcohol

Health officials in Costa Rica confirmed at least 19 people died in June after consuming alcohol contaminated with toxic levels of methanol.  According to The Associated Press, the Costa Rican Ministry of Health said the 14 male and five female victims were between 32- and 72-years-old and consumed the tainted alcohol in various cities around the Central American nation.
 

2.  Exclusive: Inside the vast tornado-proof global operations centre of the world's biggest airline, where staff marshal one million annual flights and over 1,500 aircraft

There were no cigarettes hanging out of mouths, no one was shouting ‘get me the Secretary of Defense’ and no one was saying urgently ‘you’d better come and take a look at this’.  However, being inside American Airlines’ ginormous Integrated Operations Center (IOC) next to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) was still very much like being in a Hollywood movie.

3.  Man died after falling from ferris wheel

A 31-year-old man did not survive a fall from a ferris wheel at a German music festival. The festival visitor stepped into the attraction together with a friend on Saturday evening just after 6 p.m. Due to an unknown cause, he fell from a height from a gondola. He was seriously injured. 

4.  Cruise line apps help get the onboard spending started early

Cruise lines are expanding and refining their mobile device apps, and one result is a growing stream of onboard revenue as more people book activities through the app before boarding.

5.  RIPLEY'S BELIEVE IT OR NOT SDCC PANEL SHOWS SNEAK PEEK, BREAKS IRON BARS

Longtime genre favorite Bruce Campbell has been all over the spectrum of horror, sci-fi, and fantasy. Now, as the host of Travel Channel's new Ripley's Believe It or Not!, he's been bringing some real-life wonders to the small screen. His first appearance alongside some of the show's incredible subjects was also his first time meeting them, which meant that the show's panel at San Diego Comic-Con was a special one.

6.  STRAT’s ‘Defensive Spending’ Will Help Rejuvenate North Las Vegas Strip: Analysts

The renovation of the casino formerly known as The Stratosphere will coincide with a “shift of energy” back towards the north side of the Strip, Macquarie hospitality analyst Chad Beynon told the Las Vegas Review-Journal this week.
