For the month of August, Fresno Music Academy and Arts is pleased to welcome artist Caleb Henderson, for an installation of his figure drawings on the brick wall of the Doris Gallery. The exhibition includes works created outside of his usual art making practice, including drawings made while trying out new media, during community drawing events, and while working alongside his students in the drawing studio classroom. These bonus drawing opportunities allow Henderson to “swim in new waters,” and work without a particular goal in mind. Sometimes these drawings elicit a new idea or technique to be pursued in other works, but for the most part the drawings are the unique response to a particular time and place.
At community drawing events (like Drink and Draw hosted by Fulton 55, now ended), community members pool resources to draw from a model. For Henderson, this kind of event provides a drawing play-time, and the space to try something new. In the drawing studio, as the semester passes, Henderson often draws while his students work on ten-minute or longer poses. These in-class drawing sessions provide a similar opportunity for exploration outside of current projects. Seeing him work outside of demonstrations, his students ask some of their best questions looking on at how he approaches the pose and makes progress in a drawing.
The exhibition brings works from the studio to the gallery, providing an inspiring look at Henderson’s process and varied approach to the figure and use of media. The exhibition includes work on paper using a variety of media, including a lot more color than one might expect for figure drawings, reflected in the selection of drawing media and papers.
Join us Thursday from 5:00-8:00 pm with live music in the ViSTA Theatre starting at 6:00 pm. The work is also accessible Monday through Saturday during business hours.
