Thomas Berry (1914-2009) was one of the 20th Century’s most profound and forward-thinking “geologians,” who sought to replace the modern alienation from nature with a sense of intimacy and responsibility. He urged humans to recognize their place on a planet with complex ecosystems in a vast evolving universe. Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim knew Thomas well as students, as his editors and literary executors. They have written this first biography of a great man, illuminating his remarkable vision and its continuing relevance for achieving transformative social change and environmental renewal. Ten years after Thomas’ death, they speak to his humanity and his intellectual stature from personal experience.

Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim teach at Yale University, where they direct the Forum on Religion and Ecology. They edited Thomas Berry’s books, co-authored his new biography, and with Brian Swimme created the multi-media project and Emmy award-winning film, Journey of the Universe.
