Formed in 1999 by brothers Frank and David Pino, WALTHAM had previously been operating under the name Dirty Larry until they set out to record a collection of pop-inspired songs in the vein of Rick Springfield and Eddie Money. This new direction was met with resistance in the scene as it was a 180 degree turn from the harder rock that was happening in the Boston area clubs of the time. It took no time before Waltham the Band were packing sweaty rock and roll shows full of converts from all corners of the music scene. Break out your dungaree jacket. They're getting the band back together!

SET FIRE: Songwriters Jess Collins and Jim Healey had worked together on other projects and recognized that their partnership came with a level of ease that led them to form a band of their own. After playing as a dual vocals/guitar/keyboard team for a time, they added a drummer to the lineup. Their 2019 EP, Prisms, showcases their melodic range and driving heavy rock sound (extra points for the poignant Soundgarden cover). Power-packed, foot-stomping, head-banging rock shows and a no frills approach led to the band's 2019 Rock & Roll Rumble victory.  Listen to Set Fire

OLD JACK: No band has a story like the Old Jack Rumble story. They remain the only band in its history to be eliminated in the preliminary week and re-enter The Rumble for Semifinals and wildcard into Finals. About that experience, band leader Dan Nicklin says, "There is no rite of passage or handed down tradition that doesn't sting a little while helping you grow." The band has since been nominated multiple years for, and won in 2016, a Boston Music Award for Live Ongoing Residency of the Year for their Last Saturdays monthly residency at The Lizard Lounge. With new faces since those past Rumble days, Old Jack still very much embrace their signature Old Soul Rock & Roll sound. Listen to Old Jack

ABBIE BARRETT: For every poppy hook-laden, punch-to-the-face rock song that award-winning songwriter Abbie Barrett creates, there are an equal amount of sweet and sour slow burners. As a singer, Abbie is as adept at channeling Sia and Ann Wilson, they are, without question, fully equipped to roll with the big leagues. It is a live band so stacked with ringers, the band is often called Abbie Barrett & The Band Stacked With Ringers (I read that somewhere, then I realized I never read it anywhere). Listen to Abbie Barrett

CORNER SOUL: Every year there is a stand out band as famous for blowing minds with their Rumble set as they are for their unfamiliarity in the music scene. From Lowell, Corner Soul have been honing their craft in rooms and basements from the Merrimack Valley to Brooklyn, but hadn't worked into the Boston/Cambridge/Somerville space. The band's style is best-defined as undefinable. They present with a gritty 70s-era Bowery sound-plus-funk swagger-plus-sweet dance beats. Come see it and you will believe it. Listen to Corner Soul
About The Rumble: You can liken Boston's springtime live music celebration to that proverbial phoenix rising from the ashes of long gone dark radio stations, shuttered alternative news sources, cancelled radio programming, and boarded up music venues. The beloved nine-night celebration has cemented itself into the hearts of bands and fans for 40 years. Since its official start in the Summer of 1979 at the infamous Rat in Kenmore Square, the Rumble's past is a storied one. Often mentioned are the bands who'd gotten "robbed" of glory or the rattlings of those who'd never participated, to the implications of the championship, this beloved Boston rock tradition faced an uncertain future. When 104.1 WBCN closed up shop in the Summer of 2009, the fate of the Rumble was blurry. As heir-apparent to the Rock & Roll Rumble helm (along with radio show, Boston Emissions), Anngelle Wood sought to revitalize the live music institution. As a result of time and dedication, this curated music showcase was transformed from a traditional band battle into an anticipated local music festival spotlighting live music from around New England. About Boston Emissions: Boston Emissions began airing on 104.1 WBCN some time in the 1980s (reportedly 1987, according to Carter Alan’s book about WBCN). Throughout this time, the show has been instrumental in introducing and establishing thousands of bands from around Boston and New England. The show's mission has always been to expose and support independent bands and artists of varying rock styles from the region. Anngelle Wood became host in 2008. In 2009, upon the demise of the rock radio behemoth WBCN, Boston Emissions moved dial positions to 100.7 WZLX where the show aired until May of 2018. In September of the same year, host Anngelle Wood took the show online where she programs the music show, hosts events, studio sessions, and books shows with a focus on new music discovery from the region. Anngelle hosts and produces annual live music event, the Rock & Roll Rumble music festival, that takes place over nine nights each spring. Online at BostonEmissions.com.
