Holy Father, God of Love, You are the Creator of all things.
We acknowledge the pain and shame of our history and the sufferings of our peoples, and we ask your forgiveness.
We thank you for the survival of Indigenous cultures.
Our hope is in you because you gave your Son Jesus to reconcile the world to you.
We pray for your strength and grace to forgive, accept and love one another, as you love us and forgive and accept us in the sacrifice of your Son.
Amen.

Principal's Report

WELCOME
A warm welcome return to all staff and students for the second half of the academic year, especially Mrs Cally Yates and Mrs MaryAnne Ashby on their return from leave.
I hope the break has enabled everyone to recover from illness and are ready for a productive term.
A special welcome to those students who have joined our community this term and our very best wishes for a successful time at the College.
We welcome Mrs Caroline Turner who will replace Mrs Hogan this term and Mrs Libby Murray who will fill a short contract to replace Mrs Downes for a few weeks.

We also say farewell to Mrs Kerry Fraser who has decided to resign after her return from leave.
Mrs Fraser has served our community and provided support for many of our students with special learning needs over the last eight and a half years.
We are very grateful for the work she has done in that time and wish her well for her future endeavours.

We have commenced the school term on a high note with our NAIDOC Week activities and assemblies.
The Ngany Moort Dance Group provided a focus at our assembly on the Mercy campus and the Year 2 students from Djidi Djidi Aboriginal School entertained the Marist assembly.
We are very appreciative of these young performers for their participation in our NAIDOC Week celebrations.

This term will provide students with many opportunities to participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities and all students are encouraged to participate to enhance their school experience.
I would expect all students to also take up the academic challenges presented this term to ensure that they maximise their learning opportunities to achieve their very best.
For most students this means that they will need to put in their best effort and make time to complete their work in class and at home.

UPDATE ON PREPARATION FOR 2020 AND TWO SCHOOLS
As mentioned previously, the Principal appointment process for the BCC Marist campus will conclude with the announcement of the Principal on 2 September.

Mr Rob Crothers, the Principal for Our Lady of Mercy College (OLMC), has already visited the Mercy campus during the semester break and will visit the school during this term to meet with staff and students.
Mr Crothers is also involved in the discussions which are underway with regards the school identity (Mission, logos, uniform, colours, etc) and staffing.

Thank you to the many parents who have provided feedback on the planning of OLMC.
We will be providing further opportunities for feedback on our logo.

When we have more details on a possible uniform, this will also be shared with parents for your feedback.
As has been mentioned several times, it is intended that current students will not be required to purchase the new uniform.
It is also expected that the 2020 Year 7 cohort will not buy the old BCC uniform.

We anticipate we will have a sport uniform available for the commencement of the school year and the 2020 Year 7 cohort will wear the new sports uniform to school until the remainder of the uniform items become available throughout the year.
Students in other year groups may also choose to purchase the new uniform items as they become available.

PARENTS & FRIENDS
The Mercy P&F meeting was scheduled for Monday 29 July.
Unfortunately, I have meetings in Perth next week and have re-scheduled this P&F meeting to Monday 12 August at 7pm in the Angela Costello Centre.
All parents are welcome to attend all P&F meetings.
It would be appreciated if Fete Stall Coordinators were able to attend this meeting to give a short feedback on their stall.
After the meeting we will have a celebratory gathering in appreciation of the hard work by all parents who helped to make the Fete such a success.
For catering purposes, it would be appreciated if parents could RSVP to the Office (9720 3300) if they will be attending.

The Marist P&F meeting will be held on Monday 5 August at 7pm in the Marist Sports Pavilion.
All parents are welcome to attend this meeting and share in the discussions and activities of this vibrant group.
In addition to feedback on planning for the Art Extraordinaire, there will be follow up on the uniform discussions and the options for furniture for the canteen area.

BEST WISHES
Best wishes to all for a successful term.

God bless
Denise O'Meara
Principal

College welcomes Italian exchange students
Bunbury Catholic College is hosting three Italian exchange students, who were featured on the front page of the South Western Times earlier this month.

Year 10 College student Rose Patane also wrote an article about the students' visit:

All the way from Milan, Italy – Alice Bulgheroni, Alessandra Capitanio and Stefany Caroca Arias have come to Australia as part of an in-school exchange program.
These girls will be in Australia for nine weeks and are staying with families within the school community.
The girls entered this program for a chance to immerse themselves within the Australian culture.
Stefany explained that they heard about the program through their principal and decided to take this opportunity to “experiment and learn about a new culture”.
While also attending school during their time here, the girls have a chance to go sightseeing and take in the Australian culture.
Alessandra said that she enjoys going on hikes and hopes to do so while here as Australia is very different to Italy, and by doing so will be able to see Australia and the different animals around.
Stefany said she looked forward to seeing the different Australian cities while Alice was looking forward to seeing the different environment and landscape within Australia.
Bunbury Catholic College Italian teacher Laura Whitfield said this was the fourth year the exchange program had been run and is significant for both Italian and Australian students, allowing them to experience cultural and language immersions and to experience both environments.
BCC’s own students will be going to Milan in November for their part of the exchange program.
We hope that Alice, Alessandra and Stefany enjoy their time here and enjoy their Aussie experience!

College Activities

Year 10 Work Exposure
This has been a massive year for all of us Year 10 students.
It is the year where we begin to think about our future, what subjects we want to do and where we want to go after Year 12.
This year we were given the opportunity to go out into the workplace for a week and explore the different pathways for the future.
Some of us went into hairdressing, architecture, journalism, engineering, vet clinics and even doctors surgeries for a week!
This opportunity allowed us to go into a workplace of interest and see how it was run and the ins and outs of the job, which helped to give us ideas on the types of careers or jobs we are looking for in the future.
Work exposure not only gave people ideas for their future but opened job opportunities such as apprenticeships or part-time work.
I found work exposure to be very enjoyable and eye-opening to the career pathways I am interested in taking.
For my work exposure week, I stayed at the school and worked in Communications and Publicity.
I got to practise taking photos, writing articles and see what goes on behind the scenes.
I got to see the different and unknown things that go into the job and I really enjoyed this experience!
I think many of us Year 10 students had fun, enjoyed this experience and are grateful for the opportunity as it helped guide many of us into different career pathways or job ideas for the future.
By Rose Patane, Year 10 Marist campus student

“Following and learning about becoming a veterinarian has been one of the best experiences ever. Learning how hard they work to try to get the best outcome for your beloved pet is unbelievable and very difficult. I have found it challenging at times but also rewarding.”
Sinead Crowley

“I did work experience at Kirup Primary School so I was working with 4-year-old kindergarten kids. I’ve had an amazing time and thinking to have a career that involves working with younger children. I helped them with some of the activities they were doing such as making food and playing play dough, and swinging them on the swings at recess and lunch which was definitely my favourite part of the experience!”

NAIDOC Week
Bunbury Catholic College has spent the opening week of term celebrating NAIDOC Week, which officially occurred during the school holidays and had the national theme of "Voice. Treaty. Truth.".
We held assemblies on each campus and had the Ngany Moort Dance Group entertain us at Mercy on Tuesday, before students from Djidi Djidi Aboriginal School sang at Marist on Wednesday.
Students also had the opportunity to try yonga (kangaroo) stew at lunch time and other activities during the week included music, debates and demonstrations.
Interschool chess
On 14 June, the College chess team travelled to South Coast Baptist College to participate in the Rockingham Division of the interschool chess competition.
After a hard-fought tournament, the placings ended up being decided by the final game of the day.
BCC finished fourth and narrowly missed out on a top three finish.
Our team consisted mostly of lower school students, who performed very well and should do even better in future years.
Our top player was Riley Elstermann, who won five out of seven games and finished equal fifth overall.
We now qualify for the state finals, which will be held at Perth Modern School in September.

Mercy Campus

Ethics Olympiad
Mercy students Michael Yates, Ethan and Jack Nankivell (all Year 9), Jack Cross and Josh Jacob (both Year 10) participated in the Ethics Olympiad.
Held in Perth on Wednesday 26 June, there were 14 schools competing and the Mercy team tied fifth.
The competition comprised three rounds and a final and teams were required to discuss and try to come to an ethical conclusion on a number of topics.
The competition lasted four hours and the team was fairly jaded by the end, having also left Mercy at 6am.
Our team can hold their heads high as the Year 9 and 10 students were mostly opposed to teams with five Year 12 students who were doing ATAR Philosophy.

Mercy Year 7 students acknowledged
The final Year 7 Mercy assembly for Semester One was coordinated by the Homeroom Representative team.
After commencing the Assembly with a thanksgiving prayer for our semester's achievements, the representatives awarded Merit Certificates to the students on behalf of subject teachers.
House Points totals were also awarded to individual students for their consistency not just in their academic efforts but also for their commitment and service to their College.
These students were able to enjoy a 'pizza lunch' provided by Mr Walters and homeroom teachers.
A homeroom draw also took place and the lucky students received a $5 cafe voucher.
We would like to thank the cafe manager Mrs Evans for organising the vouchers.
As we commence Semester Two, we would like to thank our Homeroom teachers, Mr McKenzie, Ms Czichy, Mrs Johnstone, Mrs Godwin and Mr McGeoch and all our teachers at the Mercy campus for their hard work and dedication.

Tree planting
A group of Mercy students headed to Myalup during the last week of Term 2 for tree planting.
They braved stormy conditions to plant 1600 trees, which will help with Myalup sand dune restoration.
On a difficult day, this is a very commendable effort by our students!

Marist Campus

Valentine wins Marist cross-country
On the morning of Friday June 28, our Marist campus students battled it out on the 3.5km cross-country track.
Defying the forecast, we were blessed with fine and sunny weather and an enjoyable competition.
Valentine won the day with 145 points, followed by Marcellin on 128, McAuley on 126 and Xavier on 122.
Photos from the day, plus the winners for each age group, are on our website and can be accessed via the link below.
The top five students will compete next week against their Mercy counterparts for places on the interschool team, with that carnival to be held in Week 3.

Pastoral News

Year 12 Retreat
Year 12 students from both campuses enjoyed a momentous occasion in the final two weeks of term, spending two nights away on their Retreat.
Students boarded buses to begin their Retreat journey, all with positive spirits.
With a focus on exploring self, relationships with family and relationships with God, all students eagerly participated in the activities, creating memorable experiences for their time at BCC.
Both students and staff are grateful for the opportunity that was provided for reflection, individual growth and self-discovery.
It was a much-needed break at a very busy time for our Year 12 students and a spiritual and inspiring experience for all involved.
The Marist campus year group was divided into three smaller groups of approximately 35 students who went to different sites.
The Retreat involved practical activities, small group sharing, individual reflection, teachers sharing personal testimonies and ritual.
The Rituals included a Reconciliation/Healing Ceremony and a Mass.
Thank you to Father Theo, Father Wayne and Father Gerald who celebrated our Masses at the various sites and attended parts or all of the Retreat.

Sports permission forms to go electronic
Our permission forms for College representative sports will now be in electronic form.
A hyperlink will be sent to the parents' SEQTA inbox with information about the event and the due date of the permission form.
Students will be informed of their selection in the team and will be advised that their permission form will be sent to their parents directly via SEQTA.
The best way to access these forms is via the SEQTA Engage App available to download from the App Store for iPhone users and the Google Play Store for Android users.
SEQTA Engage is also available through your web browser on your electronic device.
If there are any issues with this process, students should visit the PE Office and ask for assistance.
As always, if the permission forms are not received by the due date, students may be eliminated from their opportunity to represent the College.
We thank you for your assistance as we are trying to reduce our impact on the environment by using less paper for permission forms.
State representatives visit Melbourne
Marist Year 7 student Riley Stenhouse represented WA's Under-13s team in the national indoor cricket championships in Melbourne during the holidays.
His team made the grand final but unfortunately lost, however they performed admirably - having won two sudden-death finals to reach the decider after finishinf fourth on the ladder.
Riley had a great tournament and is already talking about doing it all again next year!

Mercy Year 12 student Kyle Lee has been named as captain of the School Sport WA swimming team, who will compete in Melbourne next week.
This is another fantastic achievement from a swimmer who has already experienced plenty of success and we wish Kyle well for the national championships.
