2019 Session Highlights

The next few newsletters will highlight the amazing sessions we have planned for our delegates this year! Here are the first two sessions taking place on Friday, October 4th, following the AGM…
Session Spotlight 1: Leadership Continuity Risk in Credit Unions
Facilitator: Cindy Dobson, (MBA, CPHR), Consultant, Central 1 People Solutions

In this session, Cindy will outline and discuss contributing factors to leadership continuity risk for credit unions, such as the demographics of current leaders and continuing requirements, changing skills and competencies needed for the GM/CEO role, and the pipeline and readiness for the next generation of GM/CEO candidates, as well as the importance of the CEO/Board relationship to the success of the credit union. She will introduce mitigation strategies - both as a system and individual credit unions - including what the board can do to assess and increase their own readiness for leadership transition, GM/CEO candidate identification and executive development planning, alternate leadership models, and things boards can do to set new CEOs up for success through effective onboarding, network support and performance expectations.
Session Spotlight 2: Board Membership Engagement
Moderator: Anthony Piscitelli, Vice-Chair, Your Neighbourhood Credit Union & Vice-Chair, DF Executive
Panel: Patricia McLeod, Chair, Calgary Co-op; Sean Geoby, Assistant Professor, University of Waterloo; Tim Foster, Director (Former Chair), Northern Credit Union & Directors’ Forum Executive.

This session will explore how we as Board Directors are engaging with our members, and the importance of really knowing our members, and what they want and need from their credit union/caisse populaire. The panel will include an explanation of the theory behind the board's role in engagement and practical discussions of how to ensure credit unions are being responsive to the membership.

Nominations Open for Executive Seats

The DF Executive invites new credit union and caisses populaires directors to join the committee! Learn more about the roles and obligations.

There are currently two seats available, as terms are up for both Pauline Wainwright (PACE Credit Union) and Stephen McDermott (Comtech Fire Credit Union).

Nominees are expected to attend the Forum as a paid registrant, and the election will take place at the Annual General Meeting the morning of Friday, October 4th.

Please note that nominations are no longer permitted from the floor, so interested candidates must complete and return the nomination form by the September 13th deadline.

Young Director Bursaries Still Available

There are still two bursaries available for young directors to attend the conference free of charge! The next two applications we receive and that meet the selection criteria will take advantage of this great opportunity.

The bursary covers the entire cost of the registration fee (and any meals served during the conference), but doesn’t include dinners, accommodations or travel expenses, which are to be covered by the credit union or caisses populaire.

The committee is allowing for intern board directors to apply, as the Forum is a wonderful introduction to the world of credit union governance.

The application deadline is September 6th. Click to learn more about the bursary and the criteria to apply, and to access the application form.

Seeking Candidates for Long Term Service Awards

Each year the Directors’ Forum recognizes the contributions of system directors who have served on a credit union or caisse populaire board for a period of nine years or more.

The Long-Term Service Awards are distributed at the end of the Annual General Meeting, taking place on Friday, October 4th between 8 and 9am. Eligible candidates must not have received an LTSA from the DF before, be a current system director, as well as a paying delegate of the 2019 Forum.

Learn more about the awards and how to apply by the August 30th deadline.

Register Before August 31 and Save!

August 31st is the deadline to register before the rates go up again, so don’t miss the deadline and save!

The fee of $800 + HST includes all conference-related sessions and activities from Thursday, October 3rd to 5th, as well as one drink ticket for the welcome cocktail reception, two hot buffet breakfasts, one hot buffet lunch and three refreshment breaks.

Please note there is no dinner banquet this year, so delegates are required to make their own dinner reservations on Thursday and Friday evenings, which are not included as part of the registration fee.

We have adopted a brand new registration platform to make the process easier for our delegates. Visit us online for more information and to register today!

Reserve Your Accommodations before the Block is full!

The room block at the special group rate of $155 + HST (standard room) is filling up fast and the room block is getting close to being full. Once this happens, delegates may be required to pay the prevailing rate offered by the venue.

It is not the responsibility of the DF to book accommodations for our delegates. Please make your own reservations directly with the Hilton Mississauga/Meadowvale’s reservation department by phone or online (details are available on our website).
