New Plans for Former City Building Site

Over the last 14 years, the former Parks, Recreation and Culture building, located at the corner of Montrose Road and Lundy's Lane has deteriorated substantially. Since the cost to renovate the interior and exterior of the building are prohibitive, Council approved the removal of the building's Heritage Designation, and the building's demolition. The land will be incorporated into the current landscape of Lundy's Lane Cemetery, including a beautification component.

Common Fare Structure - Inter-municipal Transit

A Region wide fare structure and strategy for Inter-municipal Transit was approved by Council on Tuesday. The new structure will go into effect in 2021, and will provide a common fare structure and fare payment technology undertaken by the Niagara Region. The strategy will balance customer focus, cost and impact to riders.

Council also approved a pilot project, providing riders 60 years of age and older, free rides on Niagara Falls Transit system, for three months, starting September 1, 2019. The goal of the pilot is to better understand the City's older adult rider patterns and habits.

Derelict Buildings in the City's Tourist Core

At Tuesday's meeting, a public meeting was held to discuss the negative impact derelict buildings have on surrounding uses in the City's tourist core. Council approved extending an incentive, available to property owners that remove derelict buildings, for 2 years. The incentive enables the zoning of a property to be changed to Deferred Tourist Commercial, provided any dwelling on it has been removed and landscaped open space has been established on the property.

Provincial Offences Act Fines

An Inter-municipal Tax Collection Agreement with the Niagara Region was approved by Council on Tuesday. This agreement will allow the City to collect Provincial Offences Act (POA) fines on behalf of the Region through the property tax system. Staff proposed a $35 fee on property owners who have defaulted on their POA fines, to cover the cost of staff time and resources. All of the other 11 area municipalities in the Region have also approved the agreement.

9th Annual Heater's Heroes Run For Children

On Saturday, August 10, 2019, the 9th Annual Heater's Heroes Run for Children will take place at Oakes Park from 12 noon to 10 pm. The event provides free family fun while supporting local children in need. Every hour starting at 12 noon to 5 pm a lap will be run/walked around the track to acknowledge a child's fight for their life and someone who lost their fight.

Thursday, August 15, 2019 has been proclaimed as Brother-Sister Community Day in the City of Niagara Falls. This day is dedicated to the love between brothers and sisters, and the bond that they have shared since their childhood.

National Polycystic Kidney Disease Awareness Day
Wednesday, September 4, 2019 has been proclaimed at National Polycystic Kidney Awareness Day in Niagara Falls. In September, walks will take place in several locations to honour friends, family and supporters impacted by PKD to help raise funds for research and improve the quality of life for those afflicted with PKD.
