Synod Survey for 2020 Bishop Election
In 2020 the Southeastern Iowa Synod will elect a new bishop. The Synod Ministry Profile Committee, appointed by the Synod Council, is conducting a survey to better understand the ministry setting of this synod. The results of this survey will be used in the formation of the synod’s ministry site profile which will be made available to everyone in the synod. This profile will be used in the call process and the election of a new bishop at the 2020 Synod Assembly.

Katie on Vacation

Katie will be on vacation from July 29 through August 2. The office will have a volunteer Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Please send requests and projects to stjohnely@southslope.net and I will respond to them as soon as I get back. For anything urgent, contact Pastor at 319-848-4510.

Lutheran World Relief School Bags

Summer is here, but before we know it, it will be time to start thinking about shopping for school supplies. This fall, the Sunday School Kids will be participating in collecting school supplies to assemble LWR School Kits. And since back to school sales are coming soon, please think about picking up extra supplies for the kits.

Why school supplies? Because, to the children who receive School Kits, these supplies mean the difference between getting an education or not. Public school is usually free, but in the places where LWR works, even a few required supplies, like notebooks, pencils and scissors, make a world of difference for families that struggle to afford their children’s education.

Items needed are:
4      70 page spiral notebooks (wide or college ruled)
1      12 inch ruler with centimeters on one side
1      METAL pencil sharpener (plastic do not last)
1      blunt school scissors
5      unsharpened #2 pencils
5      black or blue ink pens (no gel)
1      box 15 or 24 crayons
1      2 ½ inch eraser

All of these supplies will be placed in a drawstring back pack. The back pack must meet certain criteria and can be made following the pattern supplied by LWR or will be purchased.

Are you interested in making the school bags?

The pattern will be available at the welcome center very soon.  Also, material for the bags is available AND pre-cut for the bags! All you have to do is sew it together. Please contact Joyce Graves (563-495-0269) for more information (including the pattern for the back packs).

VBS Registration Now Open!

"In the Wild" will be the theme for this years Vacation Bible School at St. John.  On-line registration is now open!  VBS will be held July 22-26, 2019 from 5pm- 8:15pm for children from 3 years old to entering 6th grade.  A light meal for the whole family will start at 5pm.  Opening music will start at 5:30.  (Parents, please plan to stay with your children until opening starts.) We will sing, do crafts, play games and learn about Jesus' love for us.  We will gather at the end of the night at 8:05-8:15 for closing music and announcements and would invite adults to join us.  Children will need to be checked in and out each evening by a parent or responsible adult for security purposes.  On Friday night, Families are invited to a short program and treats at 7:45 pm.

It takes a whole crew of people to provide a great week at bible school and we could use your help.  There is a need for a science rotation leader and adult crew leaders for the week.  Teen helpers are always needed to follow the crews of kids around and to assist the rotation station leaders.  Don't forget about the kitchen helpers too!  They can always use a hand to set up or clean up after the meal.  Even if you are available for only one night, let us know and we can put you to work.  Any time that you can offer helps us to provide a spectacular experience for the kids!  Volunteer sign up is available on-line through the St. John website or call Katie at the church office.  Can't spare any time during the week?  Sign up to help provide desserts for the meals or simply pray for all of those who are attending or assisting with the week.

VBS Dates to remember-

July 20- 9 am line up on Stinocher Street for Beef Days parad- come help by riding the float and throwing candy
July 21- 12pm- start decorating for VBS.  We will work until we are done- all are welcome!

Give Electronically This Summer

Would you find it helpful to have your offerings debited directly from your bank account as you probably do with other obligations? St. John appreciates the efforts of congregation members to make consistent donations throughout the year—especially during popular winter and summer travel periods. If you have plans to travel this summer, electronic giving gives you a convenient way to keep up with your intended offerings. Visit our church website to sign up.

     Worship 101: Study Guide

Worship is at the center of the Christian faith and though its practices might vary, there are four essential components of worship that are still found in Christian churches throughout the world today: gathering, word, meal, and sending. The June cover story of “Living Lutheran” explores what kinds of gathering, word, meal and sending “count” as Lutheran worship as it covers the whats, hows and whys of worship. Read the article and participate in discussion with a corresponding study guide.
