The Downtown Programme will create a generous and welcoming destination along the water’s edge that is recognisably Tāmaki Makaurau.

This is one of Auckland’s biggest projects. By 2021, downtown will look dramatically different – a vibrant, transformed environment for all to enjoy.

Quay Street Enhancement

Quay Street tree relocation
On Tuesday night we relocated the last of the pohutukawa trees from within the Quay Street Enhancement project area. When work is complete, they'll be returned from their temporary home in Teal Park.
This excavator is outside PwC Tower, digging the foundations for a raingarden. Works to enhance Quay Street are underway along its southern side, from Commerce Street to Lower Hobson Street.

Strengthening Quay Street's seawall

We're setting up site between Queens Wharf and Marsden Wharf, in preparation for piling works to start in late July. Completion is expected early 2020.

Between Queens Wharf and Marsden Wharf, a row of concrete-reinforced piles will be constructed to improve the seismic stability of Quay Street. Different methodologies will be used at other locations along Quay Street, based on on location, ground conditions and design requirements. The outcome is the same at each location - safeguarding Auckland’s waterfront for the next 100 years.

Eric van Essen
On Thursday, Downtown Programme Director Eric van Essen (pictured) was interviewed by Jesse Mulligan for his Radio NZ show, Afternoons with Jesse Mulligan.

You can listen here to their conversation about why Quay Street's seawall is important and what's being done to strengthen it.
