Long before upcycling became fashionable, Latika Chakravorty collected and reused fabrics from her travels across India.
As a young woman, she moved with her husband, an Officer-Surveyor. After he passed, she lived with her son, an Indian Naval Officer who was often reassigned.
Latika had knitted and sewn most of her life. About five years ago, her daughter-in-law Sumita asked for a potli bag to match her saree.
The potli bag is a millennia-old Indian accessory for both men and women. Legend says that Lord Rama used the first potli bag to carry clothes and basic necessities during his fourteen-year exile.
Latika created a unique bag from her fabric collection for Sumita and discovered a new passion. A few years ago, with her grandson's tech help, she started selling her designs online. Each bag holds a story from her travels.
Today, at age 89, her online business is thriving. And she still uses her splendid 64-year-old sewing machine!
