Happy Wednesday and Self Care Day <<First Name>>! ,
Tech, Self-Care, and Self-Awareness 💻 🧖🏾♀️
How do they correlate as black women in tech? There are everyday things we experience as black women - microaggressions, racism, injustice, discrimination, oppression, we can go on. We often have to juggle these experiences with growing ourselves and thriving in a workforce society set up with odds against us 😒.
However many of us are joining the tech and securing salaries our previous generations nearly dreamed. Entering the tech scene would ultimately mean breaking barriers and opening doors.
Why talk about self-care and being self-aware? All the above can not be broken if we don't take action. We can't break generational oppression or systemic injustice if we don't take care of ourselves first and identify what about us needs improvement to unlock the best version of ourselves. When we do so, we acquire benefits such as an increase in confidence, sense of fulfillment, increase in self-worth. In some cases based on family dynamics, geographics, and circumstance we may have possibly lacked qualities growing up.
It's never too late to cultivate a better self. As many of us already have superb qualities needed to succeed in our careers such as being resourceful simply from life. Yet we will also become better leaders, open-minded, understanding of others, better problem solvers, and have the ability to be adaptable when any challenge comes out way.
What does self-care mean?
Self-care is the practice of taking an active role in protecting one's well-being and happiness, primarily during times of stress.
My take on how to take care of yourself:
- Don't wait to be stressed, practice self-care as a daily, weekly, or monthly routine.
- Go to the doctor and get regular checkups.
- Eat right, exercise, and get a buddy system if you are struggling. This helps with accountability. For one year straight my best friend and I would send pictures of each meal we are every day. This forced me to make sure I included veggies daily, or else I gave my friend permission to make me feel bad😂.
- Surround yourself with positive people who support you and are comfortable with seeing you happy and uplifted.
What does self-awareness mean?
Having a conscious knowledge of your character and feelings.
My take on how to become self-aware:
- Journal habits daily or weekly.
- Practice being alone - with your thoughts, travelings, and eating without your phone or an electronic device. Whenever I eat at a restaurant alone, I don't allow myself to take out my phone for up to 45minutes. Only to see the time. I travel with a pocket journal at all times.
- Identify your emotional trigger and conquer them.
- Have sn annual self-evaluation looking back on your habits and feelings over each quarter. Cross-reference them with what you were experiencing at the time. For example, did you have a time where your emotions were out of balance? How did you get there? Were you experiencing stress at work or anxieties?
While there's so much more to share, perhaps take a start on these tips. These are things have that have implemented and have had success within my life.
Let me know if you have tried any of these tips ❤️!

Selected companies who complete the course will also receive $15K. Yesterday they announced applications are extended until 8.4.19. So far only 4k out of 21k companies have female founders. Let's change that!
