Tobacco 21:
A new law in Texas

Tobacco 21, which goes into effect Sept. 1, raises the minimum legal age in Texas to purchase tobacco from 18 years to 21 years. The Health Foundation is working with the YMCA of El Paso, the backbone organization for the Smoke Free Initiative, to offer educational presentations on the new law.

Getting to the root
of food insecurity

Kelly Memorial Food Pantry partnered with the Health Foundation to create a pilot program, Fresh Start, that aims to help people overcome the obstacles – including education, employment and housing – which cause food insecurity.

Improving food access

El Paso County is offering $1 million in grants and low-interest loans to develop and expand healthy food retail and infrastructure in high-need areas through its Healthy Food Financing Initiative (HFFI).
