RGHS Weekly Bulletin 18 July 2019

Dear Parents and Learners

I trust that you and your daughters managed to have some time together over the mid-year break. We enter a very busy term with all the winter sport events including the Rhenish Derby Day (17 August), Inter-school Cross Country (23 August) and Inter-schools Netball (24 August) Tournaments.  It would be amazing to have as many supporters as possible at these events, particularly the Derby Day and Netball Tournament.  The support of the crowd is always encouraging to those playing and it is also an opportunity for players to see others' techniques and to learn from the experience.

If you have not yet purchased your tickets, for the musical production of The Armed Man and the drama production of 12 Angry Jurors, I encourage you to do so soon as I’d hate for you to regret missing out on our two main events this term.

We are excited to be continuing with our series of Dialogue Days and I’d like to thank Ms Blackshaw and the team of teachers supporting her, for their constant dedication. This week, learners grappled with the issue of preconceived ideas and our judgement of others. They were given the opportunity to discuss these ideas and share their stories, helping to understand each other and their unique circumstances. Please take time, maybe around the dinner table or on a trip home, to discuss this with your daughters and continue the conversation.

Over the holidays, we have continued with our programme of revitalising the school lockers, as it proved to be too expensive to replace them all.  There is a new set of 30 lockers in the West corridor, which was purchased with the R38 000 raised by the SEEDS programme when the current Grade 11s were in Grade 9.  Thank you to these girls for the idea and their generosity.  Also, thank you to our ground staff who have been working hard on the refurbishment of the lockers.

Once again we are excited to host our Annual Golf Day - this year at the King David Mowbray Golf Club on 6 September 2019.  This is a wonderful opportunity for networking for your business or getting to know some of the families in your daughter’s grade.  If golf is your game, what a wonderful excuse to take the day off for a school event, get some good exercise and spend time in good company.  If you are not very good at golf, I’m sure that all the other players would be very happy for you to come along as well, as you help increase their chances of grabbing the top prizes.  For sponsorship opportunities and to book your place please download the application form.  All proceeds for this event will go into the fund we have set up for financial assistance for those who might otherwise struggle financially to be at our school. This plays a vital role in the transformation process and is an opportunity for you as parents to be involved in offering another child an opportunity.

News

It is not often that you get an opportunity to hear an author speak about your Grade 10 English setwork. The author of Image in a Mirror, Ijangolet Ogwang, visited the school this past week and talked about her debut novel. She took time to sign most of the Gr 10s' copies of her book.

Senior Afrikaans Olympiad

We are very proud of Alida van der Merwe (Grade 12), who achieved excellent marks in the Afrikaans Senior Olympiad this year and was placed first in the Western Cape.

Alida will receive a cash donation as well as a 12 month subscription to the Taalgenoot. Well done Alida!
