WHAT'S UP

Happily, I have one quilt finish to share! It's Sidestep, begun in a Courthouse Colourplay workshop with Krista Hennebury. It's a unique improvisational process, considering you have a pretty clear idea where you're headed, yet there's still plenty of exploration on your way there.

WORTH A READ

ROUND-UP

A simple and scrappy quilt of the nicest variety, made by [MarvelousAuntieM]. Her fabric placement is inspired!

I got such a kick out of the name Arita/[arquilters] gave her Schitt$ Creek Quilt, which she made as a #100dayproject. Follow her progress via her #aritas100dayproject hashtag. Look close and you'll see it's quilted with lemon and bright yellow thread!

After taking a class on color placement with half square triangles, Tricia/[piecelovequilt] made this beauty. The color is just mesmerizing!

Saija/Pomada's "Eleven Suns" has so much visual interest with her use of value, the stripes(!), and of course those ovals. She shares lots of wonderful progress pics on her blog. [saija_elina]

Jo/[mybearpaw]'s delightful improv triangle quilt makes me smile so big. She quilted it with Aurifil 12wt and her quilting design gives the piece such wonderful movement, doesn't it?

Amy/During Quiet Time is the master at paper pieced curves, and her recent "Interplay" quilt is a stunning example. According to Amy, "Each block in this quilt is unique and improvisationally drawn." Lovely. [duringquiettime]

I was just about ready to push the 'publish' button on this issue when I got a glimpse of Kris/Sew Sunshine's "Overlapping Dimensions". Inspired by a traditional wedding ring block, I absolutely love how she improvisationally reimagined it. [kmjarchow]

IN-STUDIO

While working on one of my Summer Sampler blocks, it was quickly obvious that my Olfa
circle rotary cutter would come in handy! Considering if I'd used it before, I didn't remember, I hunted down a video that was aptly named Using the Circle Rotary Cutter, and it gave me all the confidence I needed. This cutter will cut perfect circles from 1-1/2″ to 8-3/4", and uses a standard 18mm rotary blade. Kind of handy to have around! [No pun intended, ha!]

Another gadget that I found immensely impressive was Slice of Pi Quilts' laser. Wow! Check it out in her post, Adding a Laser to Any Sewing Machine. Pretty cool, right?!

OFF TOPIC

It was a pleasure to participate recently in Nicholas Ball's
Inspiring Improv IG Book Tour. I dabbled with slabs, and am nearly done with my project. You'll want to check out the hashtag, #inspiringimprov, as there are wonderful examples of the different techniques represented in Nicholas' book. The tour continues through July 28.

GOTTA LOVE IT!

Small but mighty! These pot holders/placemats made by Phong Chi Lai/Studio PCL with jeans and euca dyed scraps were my introduction to a maker I definitely want to explore more. Whether you are interested in plant dyes and reclaimed natural fibres or modern quilted works, I think you will too. [studiopcl]

P.S. I (and some 500 others!) could not believe our eyes when Laura/[sliceofpiquilts] posted her travel sewing machine! She's one persistant maker!
