Congratulations to Meredith Woolnough and Jennifer Crenshaw on their extraordinary exhibition The Embroidered Thread: Interpretations from Australia and America.

Many comments have been made of this joint exhibition, my favourite being "beautiful studies in the nature of form how things grow into their destinies. the beautiful bones of nature".

Meredith chats about this exhibition here, so grab a cuppa, or wine and have a listen

Wetlands host RIVERSONG exhibition in August

Textile artist Jan Clark uses a variety of techniques and mediums to express her spiritual connection to nature in a new exhibition at the Wetlands Art Centre at Shortland in August. This exhibition is jointly hosted by The Wetlands Art Centre and Timeless Textiles gallery.

The vibrant habitat of the Wetlands will form the ideal backdrop for experiencing Clark’s diverse work. Her RIVERSONG works evoke the extraordinary beauty of tiny details observed during her frequent forays into the natural world.

The body of work in the RIVERSONG: Four Seasons of the Rocky River exhibition begins using scientific methods. Its twelve panels express, through colour and texture, the feelings and moods, sounds, heat and cold of this length of the Rocky River.

Clark uses a range of techniques and media to convey the tangled abundance of forest floors and river banks. They include printing, painting, drawing with water soluble media, fabric collage, dry felting, dyeing and free motion machine sewing.

RIVERSONG: Four Seasons of the Rocky River will be on display at The Wetlands Art centre at Shortland from 1 - 31 August 2019 with the opening  4pm on Saturday 10 August.

Birds on a city rooftop inspire artist

Ordinary birds visiting an inner-city rooftop garden were the inspiration for a fascinating exhibition by artist Cecily Grace, which opens at Newcastle’s Timeless Textiles gallery in August.

The Waiting Bird and other Rooftop Visitors exhibition showcases Grace’s three life-long loves: birdlife, printing and photography, through the medium of textiles. This happy convergence has opened up an exciting new direction for the artist that builds on her lifetime of experience with fibre arts.

The works in the exhibition celebrate the 18 varieties of birds that have regularly visited Grace’s rooftop garden. This vibrant life is complimented by the beautiful backdrop of old and intricately-designed building facades, which feature in her city block. Grace was also inspired by a line of very old Cook and Norfolk Island pines which border the buildings. It has created the perfect backdrop for the daily dramas Grace has captured on camera.

The Waiting Bird and other Rooftop Visitors shows at Timeless Textiles Gallery in Hunter Street, Newcastle between 7 August and 1 September. The opening is from 6-8pm on Thursday, 8thAugust.

The Space Between with Alysn Midgelow-Marsden

Starting by using a camera, the internet or free drawing, to select an image. We will develop patterns derived from the gaps between spaces created by repeating and reversing the original forms. You will also explore a variety of materials and techniques to express your work including metal fabrics, wires, papers and stitch. I particularly like the use of metal cloth because it results in a work which is translucent and seems ephemeral and delicate, these metal cloths also have intriguing structural and dimensional properties which we can exploit by using heat, and print techniques. We will explore these alongside paper and fabric alternatives. Bringing together the materials and your designs is when you will build a layered and intensively worked piece.
One of my pieces using this technique won the Bernina Award for the most innovative use of a sewing machine, the highest award at ‘Changing Threads’ (New Zealand’s premiere contemporary textile art exhibition).
This course assumes that you are happy to use free machine stitch in addition to hand work, but does not require any prior design or drawing skills.

Dates:9.30 am – 4.30 pm 20/21/22 July 2019
Cost:$460 including a delicious morning tea and lunch

Venue: Timeless Textiles Gallery

Estimated material fee ($5) payable to the artist
