Dear <<First Name>>
Welcome to the latest e-newsletter from Transforming the Trent Valley.

With the Transforming the Trent Valley (TTTV) team now in place, there’s lots of work going on behind the scenes working with partners and volunteers to plan and deliver a range of exciting projects to help reconnect local residents and visitors to the Trent Valley, its landscape, history and culture.

Having secured a £2.7million grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund earlier this year, the team based at offices in Rugeley town centre are already making a difference to communities along the River Trent.

Trent Valley Wildlings

Our regular Wildlings play group sessions held every Friday from 10am at Beans Covert near Branston are already proving to be very popular. No matter what the weather throws at us, we can be found having fun making mud pies or singing songs around the campfire. It’s the perfect opportunity to learn and explore in the great outdoors.

Kathryn Kavanagh, Wildchild Officer for Transforming the Trent Valley said “We had 16 Wildlings plus their parents/guardians attend last week’s session on a wonderful sunny autumn day. It was great to see the children exploring the woodland, learning and discovering more about the natural world. Those that had attended previous sessions went straight for their favourite activity with the mud kitchen and hammock being most popular this week. New faces were warmly welcomed and we even toasted marshmallows over an open fire… yummy!”

Every child should have a place to learn, discover and explore.

Going with the flow with Manor Park Sailing Club

Supported by Manor Park Sailing Club, the team from Transforming the Trent Valley took to the water last month to canoe along a section of the River Trent between Wolseley Bridge and the Sailing Club near King's Bromley. Fortunately, blue skies, sunshine and a light breeze provided the perfect opportunity to see the imposing Rugeley Power Station, the beautiful countryside and the various river crossings from a completely new perspective.

We managed to spot lots of wildlife including inquisitive Mute Swans, damselflies and dragonflies and the distinctive flame orange and iridescent blue of a Kingfisher as it flew past our flotilla of canoes. Unbelievably, we all managed to stay upright and avoid taking a dip to see what lives below the waters surface - although we did have several close encounters with the riverbank!

Community Grants to Transform the Trent Valley awarded

The Transforming the Trent Valley (TTTV) Landscape Partnership Scheme is pleased to announce the first successful applications to our Community Grants scheme funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Four organisations providing opportunities within the scheme area have between them been awarded a total of £5,750 in the first round of applications.

Our congratulations go to FISH 2013 who have been awarded £975 to support four angling taster days to promote the sport of fishing on the River Trent at Burton Upon Trent.

Staffordshire Care Rural Development CIC has been awarded £2000 to support wildlife and habitat conservation volunteering on the River Dove through their WELLIES project. WELLIES work with adults suffering from poor mental health. The grant will allow them to run sessions making bird and bat boxes and put them up on land along the River Dove, providing opportunities to learn practical conservation and woodworking skills.

Branston Friends have been awarded £775 for the creation of a walking leaflet and planting a mix of native and decorative flower bulbs in Branston.

Finally, Burton Swans have been awarded £2000 to support their Cygnet Project by funding an artist to visit local schools with a smaller cygnet version of their swans for pupils to decorate; bringing art and the heritage of Burton Upon Trent to life for local school children.

Nicola Lynes, Community Engagement Officer for Transforming the Trent Valley said “We are really pleased with the applications in this first round of funding through TTTV. These projects will make a big difference to the people and wildlife in the area, and we look forward to seeing the great work that they do as their projects progress over the coming months”.

Community Grant Applications

The window for applications to our second round of funding closes on 25th February 2020. Constituted groups can apply for up to £2000 from the TTTV scheme for projects which will take place inside the scheme area.
