NYCEDC and WKDEV Issue Microgrants to Connect Underrepresented New Yorkers to Careers in Tech and Growing Sectors
The New York City Economic Development Corporation and the Mayor’s Office of Workforce Development have issued a total of $550 thousand in microgrants to seven joint ventures specializing in workforce development to research and plan innovative approaches and provide policy recommendations that the City can take to amplify the training and hiring of underrepresented New Yorkers in tech and other in-demand sectors. Among these is a collaboration between NYCETC and members Per Scholas, The Door and General Assembly to deliver a playbook and inform investment for helping community-based organizations scale up their ability to provide bridge training to students in need in both tech and non-tech roles across the five boroughs. NYCETC members are represented in each of the remaining collaborations, which span best-in-class community-based organizations, training providers, higher education institutions, and research and consulting firms.

We look forward to being able to develop innovative tools and much needed framework required to meaningfully invest in programs that bridge New Yorkers into technical and non-technical career pathways growing within the innovation economy.”
The grants were made available through a Request for Expressions of Interest released earlier this year, and comes on the heels of years of advocacy from NYCETC, members and partners for the City to increase its investment in strengthening our human capital development systems. Awardees are expected to deliver a mix of actionable blueprints for employers and training providers, focused recommendations to policymakers and funders, and specific programming ideas. City Reached Goal of Providing 100,000 Publicly Supported Youth Internships, Mentorships and Jobs Per Year Two Years Ahead of 2020 Goal
Last month, the de Blasio administration announced that the City achieved its goal to provide over 100,000 summer jobs, internships and mentorships per year to youth ages 12-24, helping to put more young New Yorkers on a path to successfully enter and compete in the local workforce. This goal was set in 2015 with the launch of the Center for Youth Employment (CYE), a public-private partnership that works with employers and city agencies to grow and improve job opportunities for young people, and has been met two years before the original target of 2020. An estimated total of 109,137 youth and young adults accessed career exploration opportunities during the current year, marking a 75 percent increase over the 2015 baseline of 62,000 opportunities.
In tandem, CYE released an independent case study by Public Works Partners analyzing the Center’s last three years of work. The report examines how CYE has worked to fulfill its two primary tasks since its creation: bring more employers to the table, and more effectively organize and align system stakeholders to deliver more and better youth employment and related experiences. These include the launch of new initiatives (including P3, CareerCLUE and CareerLift) and the redevelopment of the Summer Youth Employment Program.
Call for Proposals: Conference Workshop Applications Due July 31
NYCETC invites organizations to consider presenting a workshop session at the upcomin 2019 Conference in September. You may propose a workshop highlighting your organization and programs, or a collaboration with partner organizations. We strongly encourage proposals which include employer partners and partnerships, as well as partnerships between multiple providers. Workshop applications are due July 31.
This year's conference theme - “Designing a System for the Future of Workers” - will examine the systemic, programmatic and business challenges and solutions found within workforce and economic development. The breakout workshops will spotlight the systemic, programmatic and employer-based solutions that are being implemented by the workforce development field. Within each of these areas, we are interested in highlighting the themes of: workforce development policy; the role of technology and big data tools in recruiting practices; employer talent needs; public and private partnerships; and the diversity of NYC's talent pool.
