Arizona Broadcasters,

We're announcing a major speaker today for September's Future and Awards lunch. If you haven't yet booked your seats, now is the time to do it! We're also flagging you to more data about the strength of Arizona broadcasting, offering some context on the FCC changes to "kids TV programming" and opening up registration for two new fall trainings around recruitment and the 2020 political season. All of that and more below:

OUR BIGGEST EVENT OF THE YEAR JUST GOT BIGGER!
ANNOUNCING NEW SPEAKER FOR SEPTEMBER'S STATE-WIDE LUNCH
We're getting closer to the one event in 2019 that brings Arizona broadcasters together. We hope your teams will join us for a must-attend lunch.

The Arizona Broadcasters Future and Awards lunch on September 10 will focus on the state of our business, preview the year ahead and celebrate some of our brightest Arizona stars.

New this week, we're pleased to announce Sam Matheny as one of our lunch speakers. Sam is the Chief Technology Officer for the National Association of Broadcasters, and leads a world-wide effort to keep broadcasting ahead of the tech curve.

Sam's conversation with all of us will focus on the tech changes coming to consumers and broadcasters, specifically in-dash car experiences, NextGen TV, smart speakers, and what successful broadcasters are doing to adjust.
Our lunch program will also include a look at the state of our industry, talk-out signs of growth, and look at ABA focus areas to help protect our Arizona businesses. In addition, we'll award six Arizona broadcasters for their unique contributions to broadcasting, including the Arizona Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

Whether you are based in Phoenix, Tucson, Northern Arizona or Southern Arizona, we hope you'll consider joining us at Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale for a very special lunch-time gathering.

ARIZONA BROADCASTING AND THE DATA TO BACK UP ITS STRENGTH
How many days does it take to reach 151 million U.S. viewers in today's world? On YouTube, the answer is 30 days. On broadcast TV, by adding up the audience from just 6 networks, the answer is 4 days.

What about reaching 68 million U.S. viewers? If you add up video plays on the 79 biggest social media platforms, the answer is once again 30 days. On broadcast TV, using just 6 networks, the answer is 1 single day.

How about understanding why radio reaches an astonishing 92% of Americans every week right now, and why streaming services may never hit that penetration.

If you made it to the ABA "state of media" presentation at the AAF Tucson lunch last week, these were just some of the stats we shared in a presentation about the evolving world of media. Part of the ABA's mission is to be an advocate and bridge between Arizona advertising partners and broadcasters. Here's the summary presentation deck for review.

Want us to present a version of this deck at your next event for a sales team or outside group? We're happy to do so. Email me: chris@azbroadcasters.org

FCC CHANGES RULES FOR CHILDREN'S TV, SO WHAT NOW?
You may have seen the headlines come through these last two weeks. The FCC has just voted to approve a series of revisions to the children’s TV programming rules that all television stations are governed by. The updates are modest  – but I'm told that's by design to ensure the changes aren’t overturned. Among the changes:

-Expands the 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. timeframe to allow TV broadcasters to begin airing children’s programming one hour earlier, at 6:00 a.m.

-Requires stations to air the substantial majority of their children’s programming on their primary program stream, but allows stations to air up to 13 hours per quarter of regularly scheduled weekly programming on a multicast stream (D2)

-While the majority of programming will still need to be 30 minutes in length, the new guidelines allow up to 52 hours a year of children’s programming to consist of non-regularly scheduled educational specials and/or short-form programming, including public service announcements (PSAs).

-The obligation to air 156 total hours of Core Programming per year remains, but with a modification of the FCC’s safe harbor processing guidelines for determining compliance with the children’s programming rules.

-Noncommercial broadcast stations such as PBS member stations no longer need to display the “E/I” symbol throughout the program to identify their Core Programming.

These changes do NOT go into effect today. Instead, the adopted rule changes must first be published in the Federal Register, and that may take a few months. Since many of you have also asked, these rules apply to full power and Class A TV stations only. All other LPTV stations are not subject to these rules.

QUICK TRIP TO DC TO ADVOCATE FOR ARIZONA TV STATIONS
Your ABA is making a quick, 46-hour trip to Washington, DC this week to advocate on behalf of Arizona TV stations.

We are fighting to kill legislation that we believe hurts local TV stations, and will be meeting with two key members of Arizona's congressional delegation, Senator Kyrsten Sinema and Representative Tom O'Halleran.

The current legislation allows satellite TV companies to give rural TV subscribers access to local stations from New York or Los Angeles instead of from their local market. It's a cost savings for satellite companies, and we are fighting to ensure satellite companies are required to offer local stations to local audiences. Joining us on this trip are two Arizona GMs, Kevin James from KTVK-TV/KPHO-TV in Phoenix and Eric Duncan from KOLD-TV in Tucson. We'll update you on our progress in the weeks ahead.

THE ARIZONA BROADCASTERS ASSOCIATION IS GETTING BIGGER:
PLEASE WELCOME 2 NEW MEMBERS
We're always pleased to celebrate the newest additions to our growing membership across Arizona. Every new voice ensures we can speak with an even louder voice for our broadcasting industry. We're glad to have KGVY-AM and KGVY-FM out of Green Valley join the ABA. They are one of the most local, community-focused voices in southern Arizona. Also joining the ABA as an associate member this week is the Tucson chapter of the American Advertising Federation (AAF Tucson), a critical partner to ensuring Arizona broadcasting can continue to help local businesses grow and thrive.

Our voice of 200+ radio stations, TV stations and associate members is strong ONLY because of each of you. Thank you for the support, and please keep the feedback coming so we can build the organization stronger on your behalf.

9 HEADLINES IN BROADCASTING TO KEEP YOU IN THE KNOW
1) Congratulations are in order for one Arizona media leader. Upon the completion of Nexstar acquisition of Tribune, Traci Wilkinson will move from general manger at KASW-TV in Phoenix to Senior Vice President and Regional Manager of Nexstar Broadcasting.

2) New revenue stream? Radio in particular is keeping watch as states may start approving sports betting by 2024.

3) Starbucks recently announced they would stop selling physical newspapers in their stores. Here's an analogy to be wary of. What if car markers one day stop offering AM/FM radios in their vehicles?

4) Netflix subscriptions declined this quarter for the first time in 8 years. Is the TV streaming growth slowing?

5)
If you're a podcast user, what platform are you using to listen? Here's an interesting new study.

6) How will next gen TV make emergency news distribution easier? Here's an explainer.

7) SiriusXM is moving out the car, now offering free streaming for some users.

8) Are you a small radio operator looking to MAKE MONEY in the podcast space? Perhaps you should start with branded podcasts...

9) Nielsen ratings could start coming to ad-supported streaming platforms. Is this the beginning of an apples-to-apples comparison with traditional media?
