"Shern de shern de herf! Sher de chicky en de farney hug! Børk! The Swedish Chef (from the Muppets)

Hello Hudson Farmers' Market Friends!

Hudson Market Haul
The little red wagon is back! This time it’s filled with gooseberries, cherries, and currants from Don Baker Farm, cucumbers from Martin Farm, and various greens and herbs from Sparrowbush Farm. The wagon owner was also carrying a gorgeous bouquet of flowers from Cedar Flower Farm that you can catch a little peak of in the picture and that was filled with dahlias, sunflowers, and other adorable sweeties.

Keep bringing your reusable bags, baskets, wagons, and carriers to market! We love being able to take pictures week after week, talk with you about where you’re shopping, and encourage everyone else to bring their goodies home in something they can simply bring back.

Weekly Recipe: Peach Gazpacho
You can certainly tell with the Swedish Chef quote this week, we’re getting a little kooky from the anticipation of the upcoming heat wave! By the way, MARKET IS ON. We thought an easy, no-need-to-use-your-stove recipe was perfect for this weekend. This recipe is deliciously refreshing and killer for beating the heat while bringing the heat!

1 red pepper
1 large jalapeno
6 small cucumbers
1 red onion
5 cloves of garlic
4 ripe peaches
4 large rice tomatoes
1/4 cup lime juice

cumin, black pepper, and sea salt to taste
fresh basil and cilantro to garnish

Process
Chop half of veggies and fruit/ place them in a blender with enough water to slightly cover/ blend until it’s pureed/ minced the remaining veggies and fruit and place them in a large bowl with the puree/ add lime and seasonings to taste/ best to let mellow for a couple hours for flavor development/ serve cold with lots of herbs

How to Eat and Where to Buy
You might want to pack this one away until local peaches are out (a couple weeks) or blasphemously buy ripe NJ peaches to begin the luscious season a little early (hehe)! You can also sub in cherries, grape and/or cherry tomatoes, and corn to replace the peaches. This recipe can also be pulsed in a food processor, with a little olive oil, to make a delicious salsa.

You can find tomatoes, jalapeno, cucumber, onion, garlic, corn, and herbs at a number of our vegetable vendors: Blue Star Farm, The Farm at Miller’s Crossing, Sparrowbush Farm, Bonhomie Farm, Red Oak Farm, and Martin Farm. You can find the cherries at Don Baker Farm and Samascott Orchard. Consider pairing this with a thick grilled steak or chop from Highland Farm or Raven and Boar, some seared scallops from Pura Vida, or a crumble of feta from Ardith Mae.

Market and Community News
It’s gonna be HOT— like local health advisory hot— but we WILL be at our normal spot during our normal hours. Please get out there early, stay hydrated, take shade, and keep your four-legged creatures at home while shopping the market!

This week Mike from Bonhomie Farm will have flavorful artichokes, snappy green beans, colorful bunches of rainbow chard, and lots of other market day favorites. Bonhomie is hosting a community and volunteer day at the farm on Sunday, July 21 starting at 9am. So if you would like to see what goes down, meet some good people, and give a helping hand to our friendly independent farmer, check out the Facebook invite!

Along with jars of their complex and totally unique spreads and pickles, Carrie and Suresh from Atina Foods will have an uplifting and refreshing turmeric ginger cinnamon tonic to help cool you down. They are hosting a luncheon at their outdoor kitchen on Sunday, July 21 at 1pm and spots are available. There will be creative dishes inspired by a movement through individual flavor profiles— this luncheon will focus on SWEET (but, Carrie assures us, not sugar sweet!). They will have music, story sharing, and their beautiful food in a rustic Catskill spot. You can find more info here.

Speaking of sweet, Peter from Scarecrow Farm will have jars of his delicious honey available in many sizes. If you haven’t had a chance to talk to Peter about his beekeeping, please listen to us and ask him a few questions. A few weeks back we learned that he regularly carries around a bottle of lemongrass oil. The oil is meant to attract wild swarms of bees. He places a little bit on the opening to a swarm box and waits for them to take up residence. AND it almost always works. The week I spoke with him he successfully caught a wild swarm— Queen and all! While you’re there, grab a dozen of their eggs before they sell out!

The tables of the Farm at Miller’s Crossing were plump full last week! The colors were bright, the veggies looked picture perfect, and they were buzzing with business! They will have fresh dug potatoes, kohlrabi, celery, squash and zucchini, scapes, kale, chard, lettuce, peas, beans, herbs, beets, cucumber, and carrots.

Blueberries are in peak! Stop by Red Oak Farm, Samascott, and Don Baker to see if there are any pints available. And while you’re checking on the blues, check in on the golden ears of sweet corn! Martins and Samascott usually bring the first of the season.

If you want us to take care of you in this heat, stop by: Micosta for some of their beautifully prepared healthy salads and sandwiches, Spacey Tracy for a side of sweet pickles, Destino for their tamales, Happy Belly for their lemongrass haupia, Berkshire Mountain Bakery for their croissants, Hillrock Distillery for their whiskey, and Berkshire Mountain Distillery for their gin and rum (don’t forget they have mixed drink samples every week too!)

Don’t forget that Bob Sheets is back at market this weekend! The ProSharp Mobile Van will be ready to hone your steel while you shop so bring your cutlery and tools! Hudson River Historic Boat Restoration and Sailing will be under the Community Tent, Salsita will be our Guest Vendor, and beloved market customer, Louis Watterson, will be back (yahoo!) to play some delightful tunes on his beloved guitar.

We are rain or shine or intense heat market. We run from 9AM to 1PM in the parking lot at the corner of 6th and Columbia. See you Saturday!
