The Week That Was: New Music Picks, Western Stars and Record Shoppin'

  • Monday July 15 - Patrick's new music for June: Going all in on Mannequin Pussy's fantastic new album Patience and previewing music from D.C. band Knife Wife. 
  • Tuesday July 16 - Jim steps into the batter's box and goes three-for-three on June new music picks: Titus Andronicus, Stef Chura, New Swears. 
  • Wednesday July 17-  The Springsteen Gang (Jim, Patrick, Mike and Sam) get back into the saddle and talk Western Stars. One of the most enigmatic Bruce records ever. 
  • Thursday July 18 - Scott Parks dials in and creates Scott's Book Spot. He does a great overview on the heartbreaking life and genius of Jason Molina (Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co.). Oh, and those records we bought for him 🎧yeah!
  • Friday July 19 - During the last record shop trip, Jim and Patrick gave Intern Sam CDs to listen to by R.E.M., Matthew Sweet and Squeeze. We asked him to listen to all three and report back.

Tuesday July 23 - Three words: Echo. Park. Jimmy. 
Wednesday July 24 -  Mike Snider and Brett Motiff discuss the Rolling Stones 1978 classic Some Girls.
Thursday July 25 - Mike Wagner slides into the hosting chair and gives us his take on some Paul McCartney sides. Can't wait for this one!
Friday July 26 - We wrap up the week with Mr. Wagner and Nick Scalera and... wait for it... they are not talking about Flying Nun!

You know him as Echo Park Jimmy, but with his author cap tilted at a jaunty angle, he wrote eloquently and insightfully about the importance of John Hughes and his 1986 film Pretty in Pink. Hit the wayback button and dig this excellent piece o' prose.

Rush right down to your neighborhood shop and grab these wax platters while they're still steaming. 

Flaming Lips - King’s Mouth: Music and Songs (Warner)
The official commercial release of what was a limited run for Record Store Day in April. The Clash’s Mick Jones joins this psychedelic Oklahoma band to narrate a concept album about a monarch whose head contains galaxies. And yet word is that the music is surprisingly accessible. Enjoy the trip.

Sum 41 - Order in Decline (Hopeless)
What started as a Blink-182-style pop-punk band has increasingly moved toward hard rock over the past couple of decades. Which is funny because most of us get less aggressive as we age.

Various - The Lion King: The Gift (Columbia)
There are two “soundtrack” albums for this Disney remake. One features the Hans Zimmer score and songs performed in the movie (cue “Hakuna Matata”). That’s not this one. This one is essentially a new Beyonce album, inspired by “The Lion King” and featuring Afrobeat musicians and a few other guest stars. Everything you hear exists together in a delicate balance.
