1.  Hunger Games Ride Anchors Edgy, New Adult Theme Park in China

The Hunger Games has sold over 100 million books and nearly $3 billion in movie tickets, but the tale of children fighting to the death in a dystopian world doesn’t immediately lend itself to kid-friendly theme-park attractions.  That’s why the developer of Lionsgate Entertainment World, Hong Kong real estate giant Lai Sun Group, is targeting a different audience.

Dennis Speigel, a consultant with International Theme Park Services Inc. in Cincinnati, says one of his colleagues toured the Chinese project recently and came away impressed.  “It’s not a huge park, but it looks to be done very well,” he says.

2.  Tokyo DisneySea unveils new flight simulator attraction

The Tokyo DisneySea theme park will open on Tuesday its new motion-simulator attraction "Soaring: Fantastic Flight," in which guests feel as if they are travelling in the air.  It unveiled the attraction to the press on Wednesday.

3.  Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run welcomes 1 millionth rider at Disneyland

Earlier this week, Disneyland Resort celebrated the one-millionth new recruit for Ohnaka Transport Solutions to experience Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Cast members were on-hand to welcome the Ridgeway family from Ocean Springs, Miss., who ended up being the lucky family in question. Jonathan Ridgeway, age 8, climbed aboard the famous hunk of space junk with mom Becky, dad Roger, and brother Logan, age 4.

4.  Jurassic World opens quietly but makes a big splash with new technology

When Universal Studios Hollywood closed its aging Jurassic Park ride in September for an overhaul, the park’s research and development team wanted to inject the same big-adrenaline scares and state-of-the-art magic seen in its latest blockbuster dinosaur movies.  But the team also had to rush to finish the ride in time for this year’s peak summer tourist season.  Jurassic World — The Ride, as it’s officially called, opened last week after several days of testing with almost no fanfare. The ride has been met with huge crowds, queues up to two hours long and mostly positive reviews from riders.

5.  SeaWorld Entertainment, Inc. Announces Changes and Additions to the Board

PRNewswire/ -- SeaWorld Entertainment, Inc. (SEAS) (the "Company" or "SeaWorld"), a leading theme park and entertainment company, announced today that the Board of Directors increased its size from seven to eight and elected Charles Koppelman to serve as a Director of the Company, effective July 19, 2019.

6.  Walt Disney World Resort 2019 New with Disney Skyliner: Transportation Opened in September

Walt Disney World Resort has a new means of transport just a few months before its opening. The Disney Skyliner has been developed for several years and will soon transport visitors to lofty heights.  As Disney recently announced, the Disney Skyliner will be officially opened on September 29, 2019 .

7.  SPECIAL FEATURE: Gulliver's Valley resort taking shape in Rother Valley

GULLIVER’S boss Julie Dalton admires the drop tower that arrived days earlier and admits it would be her favourite if she was still testing the rides today.  A theme park is emerging from an empty field and there is a peaceful buzz about what was once the Pithouse West colliery site to the south of the borough.

8.  PHOTOS: Construction Begins on “Arrival Experience Enhancements” in the Entrance Area of Magic Kingdom

The Walt Disney World Resort is currently enhancing the overall guest arrival experience at all its theme parks. From the parking lots to the theme park entrances, nearly every step in between those points is being reconfigured, including walkways and transportation loading and unloading zones, and the Magic Kingdom is no exception, with most “Disney’s Walk Around the World” commemorative bricks lining the entrance set to be removed.

9.  Tidal Twister opens at SeaWorld San Diego with Ride Entertainment

A new rollercoaster is now thrilling guests at SeaWorld San Diego. Tidal Twister is the first Skywarp Horizon from Skyline Attractions, delivered to the park in Southern California in partnership with Ride Entertainment.

10.  Universal Studios and the Great 3D Retreat

Universal Studios Florida has removed the 3D version of its video on the Despicable Me Minion Mayhem attraction, replacing the ride's media with 2D video. Sister park Universal Studios Hollywood switched Minion Mayhem to 2D video earlier this year, following the debut of the attraction in 2D at Universal Studios Japan in 2017.

11.  Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Earns American Humane Certification

PRNewswire/ -- American Humane, the country's first national humane organization and the world's largest certifier of animal welfare and well-being, announced that Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, Calif., has earned the Humane Certified™ seal of approval for its animal encounters and attractions, demonstrating the good welfare and treatment given to the animals in its care. This includes dolphins, sea lions, alligators, sharks, tigers and many other incredible species.

12.  'Firebird' roller coaster jams at Six Flags park near DC; all passengers escorted to safety

Passengers had to be escorted off of a roller coaster at Six Flags America in Maryland on Thursday after the ride reportedly became stuck at the top of a hill.  The Firebird roller coaster came to a “controlled stop at the top of the lift hill” just after 6 p.m., Six Flags officials said in a statement, according to FOX 5 D.C.  All of the passengers were safely removed from the ride by 9 p.m.

13.  mov(e)motions creates promo videos for ABC Rides’ K2 Coaster & Brogan’s m-Ride

mov(e)motions, the first full-service media agency specialising in the amusement park industry, has announced the production of two new promotional videos.  mov(e)motions is pleased to announce the release of two new promotional videos. The first is for ABC Rides K2 Coaster at Karls Erlebnisdorf in Germany. The second is for Brogent’s new m-Ride.

14.  Happy Birthday, Giant Dipper

There’s something special about the Giant Dipper in Santa Cruz, which celebrates its 95th anniversary this year. The boardwalk roller coaster evokes memories for many. Maybe it’s the wood, maybe it’s the age, or it could be the speed. Whatever it is, more than 66 million people seeking thrills have climbed on board over the decades.

15.  The day the Forest Park Highlands went up in flames

The Forest Park Highlands was a popular amusement park at 5600 Oakland Avenue, across from Forest Park, for almost seven decades until a spectacular fire destroyed most of it on July 19, 1963.  It opened in 1896 as the Highlands Cottage Restaurant, but business didn't pick up until it added a merry-go-round to attract customers. The owners added more rides the next year, transforming the beer garden into an amusement park.

16.  New "Märchenbahn" in the Animal and Leisure Park Germendorf opened: Tour in the dino area

The animal and leisure park Germendorf has opened a new attraction for younger guests. With the "Märchenbahn", the offer has recently been supplemented with a kid-friendly round trip, where parents and their offspring can take a little trip past several scenes. The ride is not included in the entrance fee.

17.  SeaWorld Orlando heats up with Summer Concert Series, return of the Fun Card

SeaWorld Orlando is kicking summer up a notch with the announcement of a new weekend concert series, as well as the limited-time return of the Fun Card.  The park will host a four-weekend series of concerts starting on July 20. The indoor concert series, which is free with theme park admission, will be held in the Nautilus Theatre twice daily on Saturdays and Sundays. 

18.  BLVD – Blackpool Pleasure Beach unveils luxury hotel offering

Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s second hotel is now in soft opening phase. BLVD is an luxury offering with an eye on the corporate market. Yet families aren’t forgotten either.  BLVD (Boulevard) has been quietly welcoming guests since mid-June and will be officially opened later this summer.

19.  1 child injured after two suburban carnival rides collide

A young boy is injured after two rides at a Chicago suburban carnival collided Thursday night.  The accident happened at the Saint Christopher Fiesta in south suburban Midlothian.  The Freak Out and Pharoah's Fury rides collided during a test around 6 p.m.

20.  Tensions Between Disney And Its Heiress Continue To Heat Up

Abigail Disney, the heir to the Disney fortune, has been speaking out lately against income inequality, and today the Walt Disney Co. clapped back. Paid To Smile Abigail Disney recently visited the Disneyland theme park in Anaheim, California to observe the working conditions of employees.

Cavs Legion Gaming Club, the NBA 2K League esports team owned and operated by the Cavaliers, unveiled plans Thursday for a state-of-the-art esports facility in Cleveland’s Battery Park neighborhood.

9.  Ropes course rising on outskirts of local golf club

Tucked away off the cart path at Independence Golf Club, hidden among the trees, a small construction crew is busy erecting the region’s newest recreational venue.

1.  Princess Cruises’ First Waterpark Opens on Cruise Ship

Princess Cruises opened their first cruise ship waterpark on Caribbean Princess.  The Reef Family Splash Zone offers passengers a fun water play pad, newly refurbished pool, jacuzzi, and bar serving up kid-friendly mocktails.

2.  Calypso Springs expansion now open at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor

Six Flags Great Adventure has debuted its major waterpark expansion with the addition of Calypso Springs. The new activity pool is Six Flags Hurricane Harbor’s largest new attraction since its opening in 2000.

3.  Dorney Park plans to update this longtime attraction

A popular attraction at Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom will be getting a makeover for the 2020 season.  The multilevel Island Water Works, a featured fun spot at the summertime recreational destination since 1998, will be replaced this winter with an updated version, Vice President/General Manager Mike Fehnel said during the Board of Commissioners meeting Wednesday in South Whitehall Township.

4.  Topless women now allowed at popular water parks in Quebec and Ontario

Two years after a human rights complaint, a chain of water parks in Quebec and Ontario has quietly changed its rules about acceptable swimwear.  Groupe Calypso Valcartier altered its regulations earlier this year to allow women to go topless.

5.  Calypso responds to allegations of racist imagery on ride

Calypso Water Park is responding to CTV’s story earlier this week on an Ottawa man calling for change to an attraction at the popular Eastern Ontario water park because of what he said was racist imagery.  Calypso says changes were made to the “Congo Expedition” ride that is a Kongo-themed lazy river in 2017.

6.  Benidorm waterpark blames paralysed Brit for ‘not following the rules’ after he snapped his neck horror accident

A water park has claimed a Brit tourist is responsible for his injuries after breaking his neck in an horrific water slide accident.  David Briffaut, 23, broke two vertebrae and faces being paralysed for life after sliding head-first down the "Splash" ride on a board, on Monday.

1.  North Carolina Zoo worker dies after fall during ‘aerial rescue drill’

An arborist at the North Carolina Zoo was killed after toppling out of a tree during a safety drill this week, according to new reports.  The North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro worker was “engaged in an aerial rescue drill” Thursday morning, and suddenly “fell 20 to 30 feet from a tree and died at the scene,” state department of labor spokeswoman Mary Katherine Revels told local station FOX 8.

2.  World's highest aquarium starts trial operation in Qinghai

The world's highest aquarium opened for trial operation in northwest China's Qinghai Province Thursday.  At an altitude of more than 2,200 meters above sea level, the new aquarium is located in the city of Xining, the capital of Qinghai, representing the first aquarium on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

3.  Elmwood Zoo's Dinosaur Exhibit Debuts Friday

The Elmwood Park Zoo is debuting a new kind of creature on exhibit this week.  Elmwood is taking things back to the late Jurassic. A "lifelike" and mobile 65-foot long, 35-foot tall brachiosaurus model will be unveiled at the zoo.  The exhibit will open at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 19.

4.  Garden City zoo welcomes red panda cubs

The Lee Richardson Zoo announced the birth of four red panda cubs.  The zoo says Ember, a 9-year-old female red panda, gave birth to the cubs on July 17, 2019.  This is Ember’s sixth litter (her fifth with Charlie, the zoo’s 6-year-old male, as the sire).

5.  Jacksonville Zoo Faces Nearly $15,000 in Penalties After Rhinoceros Injures Zookeeper

The Jacksonville Zoological Society Inc. faces $14,661 in proposed penalties after a rhinoceros injured a zookeeper during a training session in February.  The zookeeper was rewarding Archie the rhino with food in a chute when it struck her in the arm, shoulder and stomach with its horn. The zookeeper was taken to the hospital following the incident.

6.  Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen adjusts sea lion enclosures: Better view for younger guests

The Dutch Wildlands Adventure Zoo in Emmen has adapted the enclosure of the sea lions in the Arctic theme area "Nortica" to optimize the experience for smaller guests. The border around the area of ​​the sea lions has been reduced so that younger children and wheelchair users can still see the enclosure.

7.  Milwaukee County Zoo welcomes new baby giraffe

It's a boy! The Milwaukee County zoo has a new giraffe.  Zookeepers say he was born to mom, "Ziggy," last Saturday.   They posted a video of the new giraffe standing for the first time, about an hour after he was born. 

8.  WEB EXTRA: Meet this baby elephant

ADORABLE: A zoo in Austria introduced a baby female elephant Thursday. She was born five days ago and weighed about 198 pounds at birth.  She doesn’t have a name yet, but the public can vote on what it should be.

9.  Aquarium rehabilitates, releases giant Pacific octopus

The Oregon Coast Aquarium rehabilitated and released a giant Pacific octopus (Enteroctopus dofleini) that was caught in a crab trap back in March.  The 22 lb. female octopus was brought in to the Aquarium by a crab fisherman on March 26 in an underweight condition with open wounds on her arms. 

10.  Fort Fisher aquarium closed Friday due to issues cooling building

The North Carolina aquarium at Fort Fisher closed at 10:30 a.m. Thursday and will stay closed through Friday due to issues in cooling the facility.  According to a release from the aquarium, there were mechanical issues with the main building chiller, which controls building and habitat temperatures.

2.  Carnival’s Next New Cruise Ship Completes Sea Trials

Carnival Cruise Line’s next new cruise ship, Carnival Panorama, successfully completed sea trials earlier this week.  Carnival Panorama is the cruise line’s 3rd Vista class ship and will debut in December 2019.

3.  Dominican Republic releases new safety measures after tourist deaths

The Dominican Republic’s tourism ministry on Thursday announced a series of new programs and increased safety measures for visitors to the Caribbean nation — amid a slew of media reports about American tourist deaths there.

4.  Italy says it now brings in more tourism than France. But does it really?

94 million tourists spent a total of 216 million nights in Italy last year, according to new figures released on Thursday.
