90 Years of Dragons Appeal
From the Commodore
Many GHYC club members will probably be aware that the Dragon design is 90 years old this year. There is a celebratory 90th birthday party regatta in San Remo this October, the full details of which are here.
One of our own Dragon fleet, Gypsy, a 1933 Anker and Jensen, is the oldest Dragon still racing. Her skipper, Don Street is the second oldest Dragon skipper. He will be 89 years old this coming Friday. Don has expressed the wish to get Gypsy to San Remo to join in the 90th celebrations and the Club wholeheartedly supports his endeavour. It would be fabulous to see Gypsy on the starting line in the sparkling Italian Mediterranean.
Don is financing the trip. He has arranged insurance, accommodation, has the lend
of a roadworthy trailer (thanks to Diarmuid O’Donovan). Kieran O’Donoghue (who was instrumental in bringing the Dragon class to Glandore back in 1977) has volunteered to drive.
What’s missing is the loan of a reliable and powerful four-by-four capable of towing Gypsy and trailer the 1500km down to northern Italy. Realistically the vehicle should be available from October 1st to the 15th, to allow for travel from Glandore to Dublin-Cherbourg-San Remo and back. If the owner prefers, they could drive, giving themselves the opportunity to spectate the regatta or even crew Gypsy.
Please let either Don, at streetiolaire@hotmail.com, or John Wyles, at
commodore@glandoreyc.com know if you can help.
Thank you!
John Wyles
