Dear Colleague,

As we draw to the end of another academic year, I’ve been struck by the number of heads I’ve spoken to over recent weeks who have said how busy the term has been and how much they are looking forward to the summer holidays. The busyness is a sign of the massive commitment of everyone in our schools to enable the flourishing of those we serve and I am extremely grateful to you all for that dedication.

It is an unusual end to the term as we go knowing that we will have a new prime minister within a week and that we will almost certainly come back from the summer holidays to a new cabinet, new ministers and reshaped priorities. Over the summer, we will be working in the national team to do all we can to get those new relationships off to a positive start as we continue to share our vision for education and work to develop leaders who are called, connected and committed to that vision of educating for life in all its fullness.

Our prayer is for leaders, teachers and staff across our system too, that you would know that wholeness and joy.

I hope you have an enjoyable summer holiday and time to relax and be refreshed.

With renewed thanks for all you do.

Warmest greetings.

Nigel

Interfaith programmes for schools

St Philip’s Centre, based in Leicester, offers an interfaith education service for schools. Programmes provide direct contact with a wide range of faith communities and complement schools’ RE or British Values curricula. The Centre can arrange for faith practitioners to visit your school or for you to visit places of worship in Leicester.

All visits are led by credible faith practitioners who speak with direct knowledge of their communities. As a charity, the Centre endeavours to keep its costs within what hard-pressed school budgets can afford.

If you would like to find out more about their work visit https://www.stphilipscentre.co.uk.

To discuss a possible programme for your school, please contact Gail Kenney education@stphilipscentre.co.uk.

Farmvention (when farming meets invention) is a national STEM competition run by NFU Education and aimed at primary school children. The competition runs for the duration of the Autumn term 2019 so schools may want to add it to their STEM planning or even set it as a challenge for the summer holidays.

There are three exciting problem-based challenges that can be entered by individual children or in teams. Each challenge is designed to make children think about the day to day issues faced by farmers and growers in England and Wales as well as the wider environmental challenges faced by the worlds growing population. This year’s challenges are:
  • To design a garment using wool, the wonder fabric
  • To create a street food dish that takes inspiration from across the globe but uses local produce as the star ingredient
  • To design a machine that would be found on a farm in the year 2040
Each challenge is supported by curriculum linked resources created in partnership with the Association for Science Education (ASE) – sign up here to receive your free pack later this month.

There are a host of amazing prizes for the winning schools. Winners will present their ideas at a prestigious event at the Houses of Parliament, as well as winning fully-funded farm visits and much more. All entrants will become certified ‘farmventors’ and receive a reward pack including a certificate and mini prize. For more information go to: www.farmvention.com
