Hello, Lean In Community!

So much has happened in 2019! We kicked off the year by onboarding passionate associates and volunteers during our Open Day. Our youth programme, Lean In Youth, wrapped up successfully with 34 Malaysian students graduating from the one-day intensive masterclass. This was followed by our 2019 inaugural Mental Health Masterclass in May, where we delved into the importance of mental health in the workplace.

Thank you for all your support, enthusiasm, and participation over the past six months. We are proud and stand by our mission: to educate, enable and empower women in Malaysia.

With love,

Lean In Career Programme 4.0: Career Comeback

Lean In Malaysia is excited to present another year of our flagship career accelerator, Lean In Career Programme (LICP) 4.0, with the theme "Career Comeback".

Why LICP? Women make up 62% of our public university graduates but as the years go by, the number of women working drop at a much more significant rate than men. Citing a 2017 study by Khazanah Research Institute on prime-age labour force participation by sex, between ages 25 and 54, women’s labour force dropped significantly at 22% as opposed to men’s with only 5% decrease. Those who leave the workforce may not return and the ones who want to return to work find it difficult to do so.

We recognise the difficulties career breakers face and hence have curated a programme to help solve these challenges — it features one-on-one mentoring by senior leaders, experiential masterclasses, networking sessions, panel discussions and a chance to pitch to potential employers! Our first edition of the career comeback theme took place in 2017 and saw 71% of our participants successfully return to the workforce after the programme.

If you are a career breaker yourself and have missed the application deadline, July 15th, fret not! You can still join our public networking session on October 9th called "Post-Career Break: Transitioning into Your New Role". At this session with a panel of speakers, find out the challenges in transitioning back to the workforce, what you could do to overcome them, as well as what employers and the returnees' families and friends can do to support this process. Expect hiring companies and recruiters to be present. Stay tuned to more updates on social media soon!
July Update: Lean In Malaysia Sabah

Lean In Malaysia Sabah organised a Zero Waste Lifestyle Coffee Dialogue on June 15th, Saturday. The talk was open to the public and aimed at creating awareness on environmental issues in Sabah and globally, and to inspire and encourage Zero Waste Lifestyle as a solution to the environmental issues. The Zero Waste Lifestyle, which involves the 5R's, is easy to apply and can be practised daily. With a change of mentality and habits, we can make Sabah a cleaner and better place to live in.

The speaker, Ruth Yap, is the founder of Zero Waste Sabah. She is a Marine Science Graduate from Universiti Malaysia Sabah and former Outreach Program Manager at Reef Check Malaysia. She shared her journey in this area and the global statistics on this issue.

Circle member, Ee Lee Lee, was the organising Chairperson for this meeting which left participants enthusiastic on putting in the effort to make Sabah and Malaysia cleaner and safer.
July Update: Lean In Sarawak

Lean In Sarawak held a 50 Ways To Fight Bias programme in conjunction with the theme #balanceforbetter. A collaboration with Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) and TEGAS, the programme aimed to educate people on how to identify gender bias, encourage solutions-oriented discussion, and explore recommendations for what to do and why it matters.

The event is in line with Lean In Sarawak's vision, where we aim to challenge the stereotypes and encourage critical thinking. The event was supported by and held at SMA-TEGAS Digital Innovation Hub in Miri. For the programme, we invited two women leaders: Dr. Adeline N.N. Wong, Dean of Students at Curtin University and Founder and President of Lean In Sarawak herself, Nadia Masrol.

Dr. Adeline, a true believer of finding and creating a balanced wholesome life, emphasized that "All of us need to be brave, and smart when managing bias. Choose your battles wisely. Adapting to a certain situation for a while before taking action is also a win."

Nadia Masrol wrapped up her session with "Bias whether deliberate or unconscious is holding both women and men back in the workplace. It isn’t limited to gender. Give people benefit of the doubt but yes, still commit to speak up and take action against it."

Both highlighted that equality can only happen when women and men understand that both genders complement one another.

Lean In Sarawak thanked the lively attendees for spending their Saturday with the speakers, and SMA-TEGAS Digital Innovation Hub who had worked hard in making the event a success.

Sponsor Highlight: Team Ecoworld Cooks Up A Storm!

Team EcoWorldʼs Gordon Ramsayʼs in the making!

This month, EcoWorld Sports Club (EWSC) collaborated with EcoWorld Young Adults Network (YAN) to bring Team EcoWorld the very first cooking class in a new Masterchef series — our very own talents impart some culinary wisdom to others keen to impress in the kitchen!

EWSC regularly organizes various recreational activities such as sports, movie nights, and fitness classes for employees to let loose and get healthy. In a move to further this work-life integration initiative, EWSC joined forces with YAN, a network of Gen Y-ers that carries out social and group learning events that cater to the younger demographic, to introduce a line-up of culinary Masterclasses that feature signature dishes from talents within Team EcoWorld.

In the first Masterclass, Divisional General Manager of Group Liaison, Datin Natrah Abdullah, rolled up her sleeves to teach six teams some kampung classics: chicken rendang (not crispy!), sambal sotong, nasi impit, and sayur lodeh. While there were some experienced kitchen hands who took up the course to expand their cooking repertoire, it was also a fresh and interesting experience for the millennials of YAN — most of whose cooking skills were previously limited to instant noodles!

At this refreshing outdoors Masterclass overlooking Ardence Labs, participants had a blast learning Datin Natrahʼs most treasured recipes, proudly plating up their finished products, and of course, devouring their mouth-watering dishes together! The session was followed by a talk entitled Keeping Fit Through Lifestyle Modification, where participants underwent a body composition analysis, received valuable tips on nutrition, and busted common myths about healthy food choices.

Weʼre excited to see (and taste) what Team EcoWorldʼs Masterchefs will cook up next!
