Last Week to Sign up for Kid Talk

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to connect in person to review shared eighth grade data and offer insights to guide student-specific planning for rising ninth graders. This is the last week for middle and high school campuses within LEAs that participate in the Bridge to High School Data Exchange to sign up for the Kid Talk, held on Friday, Aug. 9, from 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. (time subject to change) at OSSE, 1050 First St. NE, First Floor, Eleanor Holmes Norton Conference Room.

Raise DC and OSSE launched “Kid Talk” in August 2017 as an extension of the data exchange. The Kid Talk offers middle schools an opportunity to sit down and discuss eighth grade quantitative and qualitative data outcomes with high schools regarding their shared incoming ninth graders. Middle and high schools are provided a list of shared students prior to the Kid Talk event and then asked to have focused discussions emphasizing strengths as well as potential interventions to address any previous or potential challenges to a successful ninth grade transition.

Here’s what last year’s participating school had to say about the program:

“Kid Talk is a great tool for us as a middle school because it allows us to paint a full picture of who our students are. It also allows us the opportunity to connect with the receiving high school to help our students and families to tap into at least one individual who could potentially help them navigate this new experience. Kid Talk gives us an opportunity to ensure that our students start their new school year on the right foot and have no lapse in receiving their interventions.” -Two Rivers PCS Middle School

Visit OSSE's website to see if your middle or high school is an eligible LEA. For additional information or to register your middle or high school campus up for Kid Talk, please contact Jessica Jackson at Jessicak.Jackson@dc.gov by Friday, July 19.

2019-20 DC Staffing Data Collaborative Recruitment

OSSE’s Division of Teaching and Learning invites you to participate in the DC Staffing Data Collaborative. This is a partnership between LEAs, local educator preparation programs (EPPs), OSSE, and TNTP that is designed to help LEAs and EPPs develop a strategic staffing policy to develop, attract, and retain the teachers they need.

LEAs that participated in the project have enjoyed the administration of the TNTP School Insight Survey at no cost, collaboration with local EPPs, and a robust analysis that combines findings from the TNTP Insight Survey, the federally mandated faculty and staff data, and data from local EPPs. Participating LEAs receive comprehensive reports/dashboards throughout the year tailored to their LEA. Please note, the reports/dashboards received by each LEA are completely confidential and provide valuable insights on how to improve staffing practices and how the LEA compares with District trends.

We are currently starting to recruit LEAs to participate in the collaborative during the 2019-20 school year. If you are interested or would like to learn more about the collaborative, please visit the DC Staffing Data Collaborative webpage or contact Laura Montas-Brown by Friday, Aug.23 at Laura.Montas@dc.gov or (202) 442-9892.

Engaging Drama Strategies to Support Social and Emotional Learning

This two-day seminar will help educators create and increase student engagement through active, collaborative and dramatic engagers. These research-based strategies are proven with students in grades K-12 and are revolutionizing how we teach and learn. Teachers who use interactive and engaging approaches will empower their students to work on their social and emotional skills while simultaneously helping them retain more information. The activities will help educators engage their students more effectively with tools they can use in their curricula or modules that make learning more fun and act as a strong vehicle for academic enrichment.

The target audience for this training is K-12 educators, including teachers, administrators, and behavior support staff. This training will take place on Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 12-13, 2019, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. each day at the Hilton Garden Inn, 1225 First St. NE. Integrating Social and Emotional Learning for Teaching and Youth Development

This two-day seminar helps to engage students with easy to teach creative strategies with brain-based theory to help increase attention, heighten senses, retain content, build  relationships, and decrease boredom. Current science behind the social brain provides us clear rationale of why and how engaging techniques grabs attention and prepares learners to process critical information. When we use strategies derived from studies of the brain, our students not only attend more fully to the lesson, but they are more likely to remember and apply the content. Participants learn how to apply dramatic engagers with social and emotional learning core competencies that seamlessly support instruction and student success. The workshop is intended for school administrators, teachers, paraprofessionals, and other support staff serving in public and public charter schools in the District.

The target audience for this training is K-12 educators, including teachers, administrators, and behavior support staff. This training will take place on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 15-16, 2019, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. each day at the Hilton Garden Inn, 1225 First St. NE. Participants are eligible to receive 12 OSSE professional learning units (PLUs) for full participation. Register

For questions, please contact Jessica Dulay at Jessica.Dulay@dc.gov.

Educators and consultants Pérsida and William Himmele will present a five-part, research-based framework—CHATS—that teachers can use to help ELs, as well as other students, attain greater language skills and deeper content comprehension based on their book The Language-Rich Classroom. This field-tested framework includes diagnostic tools, comprehensive overviews on second-language acquisition, and teaching techniques to boost language learning in any classroom.

This workshop will take place on Friday, Sept. 13, 2019, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at OSSE, Eleanor Holmes Norton II (Room 109). General and special educators, specials teachers, related service providers, coaches, and administrators are strongly encouraged to attend. Re-energizing Leadership and Communications in Education  (reminder)

Effective leaders in education understand the climate and context in which they operate. They understand their people and they instinctively know how to adapt their style and approach in order to enable them to fulfil their potential and bring their very best to what they do. This training will explore situational/transformational leadership styles. The training focuses on one central question – what does it mean to be a leader? We will explore the participants’ personality structure, strengths, perceptions, motivational needs, and stressors. The focus of the training is on self, not assessing or interacting with others.

This active and engaging workshop is for teachers, administrators, and school leaders serving all grade levels and will include concepts with practical strategies that illustrate how communication and stress management can be used to greatly improve your personal and professional life.

This training will take place on Tuesday, July 23, 2019, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Russian Lounge at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, 2700 F St. NW. Register

For questions, please contact Jessica Dulay at Jessica.Dulay@dc.gov.

The Science of Behavior  (reminder)

Behavior is not only about students exhibiting challenges; it involves everyone in the school environment. There is a science that examines the relationship between individuals’ behavior and the elements of the environment. Once understood and put into practice, solutions are greater than problems and learning takes precedence over behavior. Invest in proactive supports at the beginning of the school year and reduce additional challenges and costs later. Equip your staff with the tools for understanding behavior before they become overwhelmed by it, and set your students and staff up for success!

This training is open to educators, leaders, and staff serving in DC public and public charter schools. This training will take place on Monday, Aug. 5, 2019, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at OSSE, Fifth Floor, Nannie Helen Burroughs (Room 523). Register

For questions, please contact Jessica Dulay at Jessica.Dulay@dc.gov.

In this course, educators examine and choose instructional strategies to help struggling students be successful and learn to use a framework of assessments to understand student thinking.
