Jim Crow of the North: Documentary Screening & Discussion - Linden Hills

Join Mapping Prejudice at the Linden Hills Park Building for a screening and discussion of the TPT documentary, "Jim Crow of the North," which explores the history of racial covenants as well as the resistance of African Americans to this racist practice. The panel will include Daniel Pierce Bergin, Jim Crow of the North Producer, and Kirsten Delegard, Mapping Prejudice Project Director. Community members are invited to join the discussion.

The “Displaced” exhibit will be on display at the Linden Hills Park building in the hours before the screening. The film will begin at 6:30 pm.

Jim Crow of the North: Documentary Screening & Discussion - Sabes JCC

Join Mapping Prejudice at the Sabes Jewish Community Center for a screening and discussion of the TPT documentary, "Jim Crow of the North," which explores the history of racial covenants as well as the resistance of African Americans to this racist practice. A panel of speakers will connect the film to the Jewish experience in Minnesota and life in St. Louis Park.

The discussion will include Laura Weber of the Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest, Laura Zelle of Jewish Community Relations Council: Minnesota and the Dakotas, and Denise Pike, a public historian who grew up in St. Louis Park. Pike has curated both the “Owning Up” and “Displaced” exhibits on the history of race and housing in Minneapolis. This panel will be moderated by Iris Tzafrir, who has written and spoken about her experience as a second-generation survivor of the Holocaust.

The event is sponsored by the National Council of Jewish Women, with support from Jewish Community Action, the Jewish Community Relations Council and the Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest.

Governor Signs Covenant Bill

The state of Minnesota now allows homeowners to register their objection to the bad deeds of the past. Thanks to a new law--which received almost unanimous bipartisan support in both houses of the Minnesota state legislature--county recorders across the state will soon be providing a form for homeowners who want to denounce the racist covenants attached to their property deeds. Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan celebrated the passage of this legislation with a ceremonial signing on June 11 in the Governor’s Reception Room at the State Capitol. Walz addressed the assembled lawmakers and members of the Mapping Prejudice team, proclaiming that “words matter” in “a state where everyone matters.” He said that covenants represent “stains on the state of Minnesota.”

The bill was co-sponsored by Senator Jeff Hayden and Representative Jim Davnie, who had been appalled to discover that his home in South Minneapolis has one of these covenants. As soon as the new form is approved, Davnie is eager to take advantage of this new opportunity to declare his objections to the racist covenant on his property. Covenants Bill Wins Praise

The new legislation drew praise from the editorial board of the Star Tribune, which called covenants “an ugly reminder of a time in this country when white homeowners could legally bar people of different races and faiths from buying or even living in their neighborhoods.” The editorial points out that Minnesota is only the third state in the country to enact such legislation, even though covenants were used everywhere in the United States.

Displaced Exhibit

Visit the Linden Hills Library to see the new “Displaced” exhibit, which explores how south Minneapolis became an all-white enclave. The installation is co-curated by Mapping Prejudice team members Denise Pike and Maggie Mills, who have combined traditional exhibit panels with a digital map that illuminates how Native Americans and African Americans were pushed out of the area surrounding the library. The exhibit is only in place until July 10th. Later this fall it will move to the Washburn Library.
