FOR PARTNERS
Volunteers Needed

In preparing for the High Holidays CBH is looking for a few people:
  • Willing and able to do a deep clean and organize the kitchen in late August/early September.
  • Clean out and organize the area behind the ark in the sanctuary.
Also, Hollie is looking for one or two volunteers to work with her on soliciting advertisers for the new CBH Partner Directory.  This is an opportunity to help CBH raise some revenue and have some fun working with Hollie.  This project will start the first week of August.

Please e-mail Hollie at director@bethaverim.org if you have some time and can lend a hand!

The survey will only be open for a short time so, if you have not already done so, kindly consider spending a few minutes right away to provide important information for the Board of Trustees.

Yours sincerely,

TIKKUN OLAM/SOCIAL ACTION
Dear Rabbi Greg,

This summer, I am part of the Avodah Program at the Jewish summer camp URJ Camp Newman.  This program focuses on the importance of service as the Hebrew word “avodah” means “work.”  This focus includes service to the community, service to self, service to the world, and more. As Avodahniks and young members of society we are obligated to inspire change with our service.  Our largest project this summer is participating in and fundraising for the San Francisco AIDS Walk.

Despite the social progress we have made in the last few decades, many are still discriminated against for being different.  Today, many people still remain unaware of the prevalent workplace discrimination and economic turmoil faced by those afflicted with HIV or AIDS.  The intense stigma surrounding the disease prevents them from getting the help that they need.  With more people to inspire change in the world and support those fighting AIDS it becomes more likely that AIDS-based discrimination can be eradicated in the future along with the disease itself.

Today, approximately 1.1 million people are affected by HIV, and about 15% (1 in 7) are unaware they are infected (HIV.gov). Those affected tend to be of lower socioeconomic status and predominantly reside in gay or African American communities.

It is our responsibility, as Jewish people, to carry out acts of tikkun olam, repairing the world, and it is our basic responsibility as human beings to help when we know we can make a change.  Please donate to Avodah 2019 for the San Francisco AIDS Walk and help us create an AIDS-free world.

You can donate by going to our official page or you can donate through Venmo @avodah2019.

All donations are tax deductible.

We thank you for your support.

Best regards,

Talia Ordonez
Do you know of a local activity that congregation members should be informed about that will better our community and improve our world?  Please let us know and submit an item to the e-tone.

תיקון עולם     Tikkun Olam

Contemporary usage of the phrase shares with the rabbinic concept of mipnei tikkun ha-olam a concern with public policy and societal change and with the kabbalistic notion of tikkun, the idea that the world is profoundly broken and can be fixed only by human activity.

Tikkun olam, once associated with a mystical approach to all mitzvot, now is most often used to refer to a specific category of mitzvot involving work for the improvement of society — a usage perhaps closer to the term’s classical rabbinic origins than to its longstanding mystical connotations.
