Dear people of SPR,

This Sunday, we will welcome our own music director, Christian Clough, into the pulpit. I hope you can be there to learn from Christian and hear Jesus' parable of the Good Samaritan, in which a priest and a Levite ignore a wounded man on the side of the road but a Samaritan stops to help. I always thought that this was a simple story about helping our neighbors until I read the interpretation of Amy-Jill Levine, my favorite contemporary New Testament scholar. Levine argues that humans naturally think in threes: If I say "Moe, Larry," you say "Curly." If I say "Father, Son," you can add "Holy Spirit." So if I name two of the three patriarchal lineages of Judaism -- "priest, Levite" -- can you complete the phrase?

Levine writes, "For Jesus’ audience, and for any synagogue congregation today, the third of the group is obvious. Mention a priest and a Levite, and anyone who knows anything about Judaism will know that the third person is an Israelite. The audience, surprised at this lack of compassion, would have presumed both that the third person would be an Israelite and that he would help. However, Jesus is telling a parable, and parables never go the way one expects. Instead of the anticipated Israelite, the person who stops to help is a Samaritan [a member of an enemy tribe]. In modern terms, this would be like going from Larry and Moe to Osama bin Laden."

As ever, Jesus uses his stories to provoke and challenge us. Just when we think we know where he is headed, he upends the story and pushes us to imagine: How much are we willing to humble ourselves to accept help? How much are we willing to embrace discomfort in order to offer it? And what does it truly mean for us to answer Jesus' uncomfortable question about whom we call neighbors?

Yours,
Catherine
