IN THE LOOP

July 2019

Neighbourhood restoration efforts stay strong, despite Titirangi rats making international news. More grey faced petrels burrows are found, scientist and filmmakers will be working with local young people, weed removal on private land keeps growing, and coming together to plan, makes our partnership with Council stronger.

Even More Grey Faced Petrel burrows found in South Titirangi

Seabird specialists from  Auckland Council and Auckland University, assisted by conservation dog Rua, were delighted to find additional Grey Faced Petrel breeding grounds on Okewa and Arapito headlands early in May.

In June, while the birds returned to sea for 6-8 weeks following breeding, Dr James Russell and a film crew from Auckland University  installed an in-burrow camera in Okewa Reserve.

This will relay valuable information about the breeding biology of this beautiful ecologically important seabird. STNN's predator control and trail camera monitoring continues to protect the adult birds and their vulnerable chicks through their long breeding season.

Regular updates are available on South Titirangi Neighbourhood Network (STNN) Facebook page.

These amazing birds are also likely to return to the headlands at Wood Bay (Inaka Esplanade), Opou Reserve, Arapito Reserve and Davies Bay Reserves.  If you hear them we would love to hear from you.

South Titirangi Neighbours Dorothy and Tim Start Transforming Woontons Lane.

The ginger infestation turns into an eco-sanctuary for birds and native plants to thrive.
Dorothy explains, "these photos are the area around our house on Woontons Lane in South Titirangi.

Our plan is to restore the native bush surrounding our home, to have our own little eco sanctuary.

Being new to the area, we didn't know much about gardening, let alone native plants in the Waitakere's, or how to deal with pest plants.

Help and encouragement came from Nichola and the South Tititrangi Neighourhood Network, who provided us with advice on weeding and re- planting, as well as free plants from the St Francis Church nursery.

We have joined forces with four other neighbours, so most of our side of the street is now able to maintain being weed free".

Planning for Real Results

A dedicated team put over 100 person hours into planning a restoration strategy
for our network of neighbourhoods, during June.

This important effort has clarified what we can realistically commit to, over the next three years, towards the long term vision of becoming an Urban Sanctuary. Meetings with Auckland Council in the next month will help progress shared goals. We look forward to reporting the results in the September newsletter.

Change for some of South Titirangi Trouble Spots
You might have noticed weed control work on areas that have been trouble spots for a decade or more in South Titirangi.
The work on
- Climbing Asparagus and other vine removal on Miha Track and Tanekaha/Valley Rd Reserve
- Weed clearance on Regional Park Land on Mahoe Rd/Paturoa Rd corner
- Extensive wattle clearance around the bottom of South Titirangi
are the result of the partnership STNN has worked hard to form with Auckland Council.

Argentine Ants are beaten by a Neighbourhood Effort
Argentine Ants (along with the increasing infestations of wasps) are a serious threat to our native insects, lizards and fledgling birds. They are highly invasive, breeding prolifically, eventually forming "super colonies".

The united effort of neighbours in Okewa and some of Tanekaha Rd, has successfully knocked back a threatening invasion.
It's reported Argentine Ants are in other parts of South Titirangi.
