Lessons on our session on getting a grant

We held an information-packed session at the Edmonton Podcasting Meetup earlier this week with Keren Tang, co-creator of OtherWise, and Soni Dasmohapatra, interim grants co-ordinator for the Edmonton Heritage Council

Edmonton Podcasting Get-together

The Edmonton Heritage Council's Project Accelerator Grant has helped fund podcasts such as OtherWise, The Broadcast, and the first season of Let's Find Out. It's only applicable to projects that help tell the story of Edmonton's history or culture, but there may be a similar program in your own city if you're not in Edmonton.

Here are links to various resources we mentioned during the session, and a few more that we've come across since:

  • Edmonton Heritage Council Project Accelerator Grant — Up to $10,000 for eligible expenses, available to individuals and organizations.
    • Upcoming deadlines for application: Sept. 6 and Dec. 6, 2019
    • The council strongly encourages applicants to submit a draft two weeks before the deadline to get feedback.
  • If you need money to go to a conference to help build your capacity to do a podcast that shares Edmonton stories, and you're able and willing to share your knowledge with others, you may be eligible for a travel grant.
  • Edmonton Arts Council grants — Not typically granted to podcasters, but worth a look
  • Edmonton Community Foundation grants — These would need to be geared towards the particular goals of the ECF; a podcast might be the means, but is not necessarily the end. Available only to registered charities.
  • Alberta Arts Foundation — Again, we don't know if these would be applicable to a podcast-related project, but it's worth a look.
  • Alberta Public Interest Research Group — Some money may be available for one-time projects that contribute to positive social change.
If you know of a granting program that might be applicable in Calgary or anywhere else in Alberta, let us know and we'll share the information in future newsletters.

Some potential sources of funding from beyond Alberta: Grants are not for everyone, and there is never enough money for everyone. But it's worth considering if the project you have in mind would align with the goals of a granting agency, and if you have the capacity to put together a solid proposal and follow through.
