The distinguished contribution of Dr Tony Jordan OAM to Australian wine has been recognised and celebrated in two new awards from Australian grape and wine’s two peak national organisations.
Over his distinguished career, Dr Jordan has been an influential and determined advocate for the advancement of Australian wine as a winemaker, researcher, mentor, wine show judge and wine sector leader.

Researchers to investigate drought-tolerant vines
Wine Australia PhD scholarship recipient Alexander Copper is investigating drought-tolerant grape varieties from Cyprus for their suitability for Australian conditions.
The Cypriot varieties Xynisteri (white) and Maratheftiko (red) have just been released from Australian quarantine and are being propagated at the University of Adelaide's Waite campus before being placed in trials, replicating those being undertaken in commercial Cypriot vineyards.

In brief
- Applications are open for the international award for excellence in sustainable winegrowing – the BRIT Award. The award seeks to identify global leaders in sustainable practices and reflects core sustainability principles developed by FIVS, an international body representing the interests of global wine and spirits producers, over several years.
- Wine Australia will invest a record $79 million on behalf of the grape and wine sector in 2019–20, investing in research, development and extension (RD&E), market development and export regulation.
- Nominations are being sought for three levy payer-elected Director positions on the Australian Wine Research Institute Board and for five General Director positions on the Australian Society of Viticulture and Oenology Board.
- A new wine and grape levy payer register is being introduced to make it easier for Wine Australia to connect with levy payers so that they can have a greater opportunity to contribute to strategy, adopt the knowledge and tools generated by research and development, and learn about Wine Australia’s activities.
- Applications close on 9 September 2019 for the OIV’s annual grant research scholarships. Priority themes for 2019 cover topics across viticulture, winemaking, economy and law, and safety and health.
