The item stated that the new L17 does not assess for strangulation.
In fact, the new Victoria Police Family Violence Report (L17) does assess for strangulation. Question 5 of the new family violence report is: Has the respondent ever strangled or suffocated the AFM or attempted to do this?
Victoria Police members do, and will continue to, assess strangulation as part of their risk assessment in response to a family violence incident.
The Victorian Government has recently committed to introduce a stand-alone strangulation offence. The offence has not yet been introduced.
No to Violence will update our members as to the next steps in the process for consultation as they come to light.
No to Violence has worked closely with Victoria Police to strengthen our collective response and responsibilities as part of the family violence reforms and we are committed to our joint efforts in this space.
