A successful Summer School on “Advanced operation and control of active distribution networks” took place in Athens on 10-14 June 2019. The event was co-organised by ERIGrid project partners ICCS-NTUA and HEDNO, together with RTDS Technologies, and included a well-balanced set of lectures, hands-on laboratory work, visits to cutting-edge installations and industry insights. Starting from 2016, the ERIGrid project has been providing free laboratory access to engineers working in the domain of smart grids and DER. Successful applicants gained access to special equipment and advanced installations for testing and validation of their developed smart grid concepts in Europe’s top laboratories of ERIGrid partners.

Having already organised six rounds of Transnational Access in the past three years, ERIGrid has just completed the evaluation phase of the submitted proposals in the last 6th call. Meanwhile a number of TA user projects are still to be carried out in 2019-2020, ERIGrid will not be opening any further calls.

Over a billion of people all over the world, mostly in rural areas, do not have access to electricity. The main obstacle to an affordable and sustainable rural electrification is the lack of power electronics technology compatible with unforeseeable changes in either energy production or load profile. SPEARHEAD’s work focuses on studying the use of modular power electronics systems as a means to solve this problem. During their TA research, the SPEARHEAD user team tested two pilot elementary power modules in controlled conditions to validate their hardware, firmware and software design. Read more...
Despite the fact that research has demonstrated how decentralised power generation can improve urban residential electricity networks in Europe, the take-up of such solutions has yet to take place. One reason for this shortcoming is an insufficiently clear economic case in favor of decentralised generation, which comes from the vast differences between individual set-ups. Investigating the comparability of microgrids, the ECOSMIC user group was part of the effort to run comparable set-ups in life-like 24h-loops for experiments in islanded and grid-connected modes at four locations during their TA stays. DiNODR focuses on the distribution network oriented application of demand response (DR). The project has three main objectives: namely, to develop distribution network centered DR approaches, to investigate distribution network threatening cases in wholesale market-driven DR applications and to design integrated programs comprising local level and utility level DR solutions. This project is one of the first efforts of field test distribution network centered DR applications. Read more...
ERIGrid Project General Assembly took place on 21-22 May in Bilbao (ES) hosted by project partner Ormazabal. The consortium reviewed progress to date, defined further steps in the final stage of the project and was concluded with a laboratory tour at Ormazabal's TA facility Demonstration & Experimentation Unit (UDEX).
On 9 April 2019 the ERIGrid consortium held a webinar on co-simulation based assessment methods showcasing best practices and experiences in the project.

This webinar focused on the following topics:

• Development of the co-simulation approach
• Development of necessary interfaces, couplings, test systems etc.
• Implementations in the ERIGrid Project
