China issues new guideline to improve compulsory education (year 1-9)

The Communist Party of China Central Committee and State Council published new guidelines on 8 July for advancing education reform and improving the quality of compulsory education. The guidelines call for strengthening physical education and additional focus on art in the curriculum as well as greater IT integration.

Experts predicts that the new “guideline on improving quality of compulsory education” which prevent the use of foreign textbooks/curriculum may boost demand for organisations offering foreign curricula outside of school hours. This could also lead to more children being sent overseas for studies earlier to receive international education.

 
Government expands scholarships, grants for vocational students

The Ministry of Education (MoE) announced on 10 July that the number of National Scholarship will increase by 10,000 this year, all of which will be awarded to outstanding students from higher vocational schools. The scholarship will be 8,000 RMB (1,600 AUD) per student per year. A national scholarship for secondary vocational education will also be established this year to support 20,000 full-time students per year at 6,000 RMB (1,200 AUD) per person.

 
China most popular destination for study abroad in Asia

China has become the most popular destination for studying abroad in Asia, said Deputy Director of the MoE’s Department of International Cooperation and Exchange (Division of Study in China) on 27 June. In 2018, more than 492,000 international students from 196 countries came to China to study at 1,004 universities and colleges, scientific research institutes, and other educational agencies. Among them around 52.4 % aimed to obtain a diploma. Last year, the Chinese Government sponsored scholarships for around 63,000 international students.
 

China adds 46 majors to secondary vocational education

China has added 46 new majors to the catalogue of secondary vocational schools to better serve the country's economic and social development, according to the MoE. Among the newly-added majors are rural drinking water supply engineering technology, new energy vehicle maintenance, unmanned aerial vehicle control and maintenance, online marketing and intelligent aged care.

Nuclear research school to break ground soon in Tianjin

China's first university devoted to nuclear research will break ground in September, with the construction expected to last until 2021 in the coastal area of Tianjin. A total of 675 million RMB (135 million AUD) has been allocated for the construction. The new university will be located in the northern part of the China-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City - a landmark area jointly invested in by the Chinese and Singaporean governments that is part of the city's Binhai New Area.

 
Hainan woos foreign talents with eased visa policies, driving permits

China's Ministry of Public Security announced on 3 July that starting August 1, Hainan Province will lower its bar for issuing temporary driving permits to foreign visitors, and extend their validity from the three months up to one year, as part of the island's efforts to develop its tourism and attract talents from around the world. International students with a Master's degree and above can apply for a two-year residence permit if they start a business in the province. Foreign students from overseas colleges can work as interns in Hainan after applying for visas, which requires an invitation from their workplace and a recommendation letter from their schools.
 

Guangzhou schools will start pilot AI courses in September

Guangzhou in Guangdong province will begin offering courses in artificial intelligence to primary and middle school students in September. By 2022, all primary and middle schools in the city will have AI courses in their regular curriculum.

Information technology remains top career draw for graduates, says report
By China Daily, 8 July 2019
Information technology or IT remains the most popular career option for fresh graduates in China as relatively higher salaries, large number of jobs available and bright prospects in the sector trump the low mood created by recent layoffs, according to an industry report by service platform “58”. The report showed 16.6% fresh graduates surveyed received offer or hoped to work in the IT sector. This year, 8.3 million will graduate from higher education institutions, up by 140,000 from 2018.
