Thank you
Dear friends, thank you all so much for your very warm welcome this past Sunday and in the days before that since our move to Concord. My gratitude overflows for each meal you brought, each flower, each kitty treat. I felt so warmly welcomed by the dozens of hugs you shared as I entered each meeting and especially worship! I cherish your kind hospitality.
Fondly, Pastor Cheryl
Worship this Week
This Sunday, July 14th at 10am, Pastor Cheryl’s sermon titled, "Receive Your Gift with Grace" is based on scripture from Colossians 1:1-14, to be read by Kathy Hamilton, where Pastor Paul writes to his congregation at Colossae indicating his ongoing prayers for them and gratitude for the fruit they bear. He concludes by encouraging them to always joyfully give thanks to God. We will explore together how God provides each of us and our precious church with gifts more abundantly than we can ask or imagine and how beneficial it is for us both to give thanks and to receive those gifts with grace and use them in God’s service. Praise music will begin at 9:45 provided by Electric Praise, directed by Alan Schulte and Michael Annicchiarico will be our guest musician. The Children’s Sermon is titled “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” and is based on Luke 10:27. Ben Venator will lead a one room Sunday School. We are located at 79 Clinton Street and our facilities are handicap accessible. All are welcome!
Blessings,
Pastor Cheryl
Colossians 1:1-14
Salutation
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,
2 To the saints and faithful brothers and sisters[a] in Christ in Colossae:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father.
Paul Thanks God for the Colossians
3 In our prayers for you we always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 4 for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, 5 because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. You have heard of this hope before in the word of the truth, the gospel 6 that has come to you. Just as it is bearing fruit and growing in the whole world, so it has been bearing fruit among yourselves from the day you heard it and truly comprehended the grace of God. 7 This you learned from Epaphras, our beloved fellow servant.[b]He is a faithful minister of Christ on your[c] behalf, 8 and he has made known to us your love in the Spirit.
9 For this reason, since the day we heard it, we have not ceased praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of God’s[d]will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so that you may lead lives worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, as you bear fruit in every good work and as you grow in the knowledge of God. 11 May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled[e] you[f] to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13 He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.[g]
Monday Morning Quarterback
Bible Study Questions to continue studying the scripture from this week’s service at home. If you need a Bible, Pastor Cheryl will be pleased to provide one to you.
Read Colossians 1:1-14
- Paul writes to the church, we are always praying for you and thanking God. (v. 3) Pastor Cheryl prays for each member daily. How does that make you feel?
- Part of Paul and Timothy’s prayer is affirming that you are bearing fruit. (v. 6) Can you acknowledge and name the fruit that YOU bear?
- The pastoral prayer in this scripture ends with a supplication that your response will be “joyfully giving thanks to God!” (v. 12) Are you able to give thanks for the fruit you acknowledged in #2 above? Can you do it full of joy?
Blessings,

Collection for UMCOR

We will offer you an opportunity to send your support to UMCOR this Sunday. A special offering will be received and sent directly to the UMCOR headquarters to support their efforts, especially in California and Louisiana.

PRAYER MESSENGERS
The Prayer Messengers gather in the Chapel each Sunday at 9:40 AM to pray together for Wesley Church, its pastor, its people and special concerns through INTERCESSORY PRAYER- a prayer to God on behalf of others. Jesus prayed for others and taught his disciples the Lord's Prayer. When we pray to God, we are not simply saying, "God, remove all these problems and make everything easy. Snap your cosmic fingers and make it all better." Following a short devotion, we pray to God, consciously thanking God for our blessings and inviting God into our struggles. You are welcome anytime during this prayer time. In this way we empower ourselves to fulfill our mission in the world. Paul instructed in Ephesians 6:18, "Pray in the spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere." Mission Study 2019 Special Publication
Women United for Change: 150 Years in Mission Led by Rev. Elizabeth Batchelder Smith
United for Change by Ellen Blue is the first in a two-year study commemorating United Methodist Women’s 150th anniversary in 2019. It will provide a historical survey of United Methodist Women and its predecessor organizations and amplify the voices that shaped the work through an overarching story of United Methodist Women changing the fact of mission. This study is about women who established vibrant societies to support mission. First organized in the United States, those societies sent missionaries overseas and later engaged in mission at home. Each was a heroine who was willing to stand over and against what her culture—and sometimes even her church—expected of her. Learning about the early female leaders who created what would become today’s United Methodist Women can help us understand who they truly were beyond who we expected them to have been.
Spiritual Growth Mission Study: 2019
Practicing Resurrection: The Gospel of Mark and Radical Discipleship Led by Marie MacDougall (English) and Jeongseung Lee (Korean)
In Mark and Radical Discipleship, author Janet Wolf explores what it means to live a life of radical discipleship today using the Gospel of Mark as the foundation. Wolf explores the timeless issues of poverty, gender, justice, liberation, equality, and others using Mark as a guide. The stories of the women in Mark are a particular focus in this study and how, although often unnamed, they are prominent among Jesus’ followers and in Mark’s recounting of the gospel story.
Children's Mission Study: 2019
MARKED: A Mission Journey with Jesus in the Gospel of Mark Led by Tammy Verity and Aileen Stumpf
In MARKED: A Mission Journey with Jesus in the Gospel of Mark, Rita Hays invites children to join Jesus on an exciting lifelong pilgrimage of discipleship and mission.
Throughout the Gospel of Mark, Jesus engages with all types of people, especially individuals who find themselves on the margins of society. Jesus appears as an inclusive Savior, inviting children to practice discipleship by sharing compassion, love, and kindness toward others. Jesus also beckons to children to practice their faith through positive decision-making.
Youth Mission Study: 2019 Who Do You Say That I Am? Meeting Jesus through the Eyes of Mark Led by Sherry Culver
In Who do you say that I am? Meeting Jesus Through the Eyes of Mark, Carolyn Poling guides youth through the Gospel of Mark, helping them to define who Jesus is to them, who he says he is in scripture, and how this impacts how we live our lives.
The goal of this study is to help youth explore scripture in new ways so they can develop their own faith and put it into action. This is the mark of a true disciple.
In Mark, Jesus models for us how to live our lives as Christians, reaching out to those who are left out, offering compassion and healing. The author of Mark not only describes God’s kin-dom through Jesus’ teachings, but also models it for us. Through his actions, Jesus shows us that he has come for everyone. Therefore, God’s kin-dom is for everyone. The author’s message offers a chance to those who feel left out, cast aside, and forgotten. It offers belief to those who need physical, emotional, and spiritual healing.
