Opioid Scene Safety - Seminar

Presented by:
Marisa Edelberg, Medicolegal Death Investigator, State of Connecticut, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner

2 Hours POST-C Credit

Overdose scenes can be difficult, complicated places in which to recognize and gather all the evidence. This CIRMA seminar will help First Responders develop the ability to immediately recognize an overdose scene and the death artifacts related to a fatal overdose. The presenter will show how to analyze and gather information that will aid in processing the scene, including knowing what evidence is pertinent. This seminar will also show the history of specific types of drugs and packaging trends, as this evidence can be overlooked. The instructor will present actual case studies of overdose scenes and the death investigations.

Topics include:
  • Gathering and collecting of evidence at drug overdose scenes (fatal overdoses).
  • The role of the investigators and team approach.
  • Discussion of evidence for death investigation prosecution.
  • Case studies of particular scenes of drug overdoses (Photos of death investigations are used as learning tool).
  • Categories of illicit drugs and their effects on the body.
  • Noted trends as it relates to drug death investigations.
  • Body positioning and evidence to search for during drug overdose investigations.
  • Crime scene investigation specific to follow-up fatal overdoses.
