 The Fishermen know that the sea is dangerous and the storm terrible, but they have never found these dangers sufficient reason for remaining ashore.
~ Vincent Van Gogh,
The Terrible Storm

Dear Friends,

As many of you who were home this past Monday know all too well… the storm that hit DC and her neighboring counties was a doozy.  I was glad not to see any Saint David’s friends or faithful in the photos of folks standing on the tops of their cars on Canal Road (and then, of course, prayed for those that were and the first responders who came to their rescue) and pray that you all stayed safe through the flash floods and did not suffer any real or lasting damage from them.

Saint David’s, being very near the bottom of Spring Valley and undergirded by springs aplenty, alas, experienced a significant amount of water damage.  As we continue through the week to clear and dry out the lower level of the church, it has become clear that this is a complex job that will need outside remediation and renovation.  Therefore…
  • Please keep Saint David’s and all those with significant property damage in your thoughts and prayers;
  • Look for weekly updates on the “state of the undercroft”, and know that, for now, it is out of commission;
  • Consider offering your time, brawn and sweat alongside fellow parishioners and neighbors on Saturday, July 13 and Sunday, July 14 from noon to 4pmfor two days of hauling and cleaning out the undercroft and the first floor of the parish house so that we can temporarily move the nursery, kitchen and meeting space there until we finish work on the undercroft (bring work clothes & gloves); and
  • Join me, the leadership of your vestry and Vincent Van Gogh in believing that with every storm comes the promise of new life and adventure!

Friends, our hand is forced in having to empty the basement of the church… the gift is that we get to dream together about what and how we will rebuild.  So, pray, stay informed, imagine new possibilities and come join us this weekend as we empty out our space so that we can get to work on a new chapter.

Stay dry and joyful, dear ones,
Kristen
